Norwich GoGoDragons

A second wave of Norwich GoGoDragons! mania is set to hit the City this weekend with the arrival of a further 120 dragons flying into the city to go on display from Saturday 4 July.

The much anticipated arrival of the Schools’ Dragons from the GoGoDragons! Schools’ Project 2015 will enhance the experience for dragon hunters this summer as the Schools’ Dragons join the 84 large GoGoDragons that have been on Norwich’s streets since 21 June.

The GoGoDragons! Schools Project 2015 is a Wild in Art Project brought to Norwich by The Forum, working closely with Break, Norwich HEART, Norfolk & Norwich Festival Bridge and is sponsored by Pensthorpe Natural Park.

The Forum, in partnership with these organisations, has delivered the education strand of GoGoDragons! 2015 and engaged with over 100 local schools and community groups. They have explored subjects such as local heritage and legends, conservation, citizenship and art via a specially designed cross curricular Creative Education Pack to celebrate Norwich’s heritage, culture and creativity. Many of the schools also hosted professional artists who delivered heritage sessions on dragons, arts and crafts, story telling, drama and offered inspiration for the designs of the baby Schools’ Dragons.

Each of the schools and community groups invested time decorating their own baby Schools’ Dragon and each one represents the artistic talents and imagination of all of those involved in the project. All 120 Schools’ Dragons will be on display in Norwich city centre from Saturday 4 July until Saturday 5 September.

The Schools’ Dragons are located as follows: 26 at The Forum as part of the Dragons at the Forum experience, 19 at Castle Mall, 25 at intu Chapelfield and 50 around the Norwich Lanes and other independent retailers connected with Break. Schools and community groups can visit www.theforumnorwich.co.uk/dragonlocations to find out where their dragon is located.

Tim Bishop, Chief Executive of The Forum said: “We were delighted to be approached by Wild in Art to lead the GoGoDragons! Schools’ Project and to work with local partners in its delivery. The Forum is an educational charity with a commitment to learning and this project has enabled us to engage with schools and community groups to deliver a really exciting project about the rich history and relevance of dragons in Norwich and Norfolk. We can’t wait to see all of the Schools’ Dragons in situ and for visitors on the GoGoDragons! trail to see for themselves just how creative the schools have been in the decoration of these 120 dragons.”

Sally-Ann Wilkinson, Director at Wild in Art said: “We are overwhelmed by the quality, range and diversity of designs from all the participating schools.  Each of the dragons tell individual stories of the aspirations of young people, their school and wider community.  Thank you to all the teachers, young people and participants for their contribution to the success of the schools project and for clearly demonstrating the importance of creativity in the classroom and beyond.”

There has been much support for the GoGoDragons! Schools’ Project from the participating local schools and also from local businesses who have donated their time and services for free to assist in the project delivery. City College Norwich provided a home for all of the 120 decorated dragons and its photography students photographed all of the dragons for use by project partners.  Norfolk coach company, Maretts Chariots, have donated staff and transport to help move the 120 dragons from City College to their new homes around the city.  The transportation of the Schools’ Dragons from City College is taking place on Friday 3 July so the baby dragons are in place and ready for early dragon hunters on Saturday.

The Schools’ Dragons will be on display until Saturday 5 September when the schools and community groups will collect their baby dragons and keep them as a permanent reminder of their contribution to GoGoDragons! 2015. The large dragons will be auctioned on 1 October at The Forum and the proceeds of this project will fund the valuable work of Norfolk charity Break who support vulnerable children, young people and families across East Anglia.
