ActivSuffolk

Older people in the Waveney area are invited to join in some free fun activities this summer through the Activities4me project organised by ActivLives, with funding from Waveney District Council.

Following a series of successful taster sessions held at lunch clubs, long-term health condition groups, day centres and local libraries this summer; the charity is teaming up with other local organisations including Age UK Suffolk, OneLife, Sentinel Leisure and Citizens Advice, to host the following Activity Showcase Days:

Southwold:
Tuesday 11 July at Rugby club, Southwold IP18 6TB

Bungay:
Thursday 13 July at The Chaucer Club, Bungay NR35 1EB

Halesworth:
Tuesday 18 July at The Cut, Halesworth IP19 8BY

Beccles:
Monday 24 July at Public Hall, Beccles NR34 9AD

All events are 10am – 2pm.

The Activity Showcase days are open at anyone over the age of 55 (with no upper age limit!), who would like to try some very accessible sport activities.  The programme of taster sessions will include New Age Kurling, New Age Bowls and the Paralympic sport of Boccia. These popular activities are designed to be engaging for everyone regardless of age or previous sporting experiences–designed to include anyone seating in a chair or wheelchair.

Caroline Mackinson, Beccles and Bungay Coordinator, ActivLives. “We’ve had a fantastic response to our taster activity sessions so far. The activities offer something for everyone and are ideal for people that finds it difficult to keep physically active and miss the sports or social activities they enjoyed in the past.’

“The sessions are also about offering people the chance to have some fun with others in their community –  it doesn’t usually take long before everyone wants to have a go.  We would encourage anyone who would like to try something new to come along to one of our events.”

The project is also collecting feedback from older people about how they currently keep active, barriers to being more active and exploring what activities could be developed in the area in the future.

The free showcase events include complimentary refreshments. To book your place please call ActivLives on 01473 345350.

Notes

Activities4me is the Waveney project of Ipswich based charity ActivLives.  The project is funded by Waveney District Council.

The project is about giving people who don’t consider themselves to be ‘sporty’, opportunities to have a go at sports that they wouldn’t otherwise play, in places that they wouldn’t expect to play them! The emphasis is very much upon the social as well as the physical benefits that can be gained from getting involved with regular physical activity.

The type of activities offered as part of this project currently include: New Age Kurling, Boccia, Bowls.

ActivSuffolk

Is run by ActivLives and funded by Public Health, which is aimed at promoting physical activity to people who are over the age of 55. It is focussed on increasing physical activity levels and reducing loneliness and social isolation by building local ActivHubs in Ipswich, Leiston, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Eye, Debenham and Lakenheath.

ActivLives

ActivLives is an independent charity working with individuals and communities, of all ages, but with a particular focus on people over the age of 45 who live in hard pressed areas in Ipswich and across Suffolk. It grew out of the Town and Bridge Project, which started in 2006.
