Author and biographer Artemis Cooper will be introducing her new biography of local author Elizabeth Jane Howard at a special event at Bungay Library later this month.
The event on the evening of Tuesday 27 September has been organised by the Bungay Community Library group in tribute to Elizabeth Jane Howard who lived locally until her death in 2014 and was a patron and supporter of the library.
‘A Dangerous Innocence’ is the authorised biography of her life and is the latest book by Artemis Cooper who has written a number of books including Cairo in the War, 1939-1945, Writing at the Kitchen Table: The Authorized Biography of Elizabeth David and Patrick Leigh Fermor: An Adventure.
Elizabeth was a popular and bestselling author in her own right. She won the John Llewellyn Rhys prize for her debut novel ‘The Beautiful Visit’. She was the author behind the beloved The Cazalet Chronicles series, as well as numerous other titles which were usually concerned about the way in which love can alter people. Her stepson, Martin Amis, credits her “energy and determination” for inspiring his own love of reading and writing.
Her style, sophistication and talent is well documented, as are her associations with famous literary figures of the time. Her most famous marriage was to Kingsley Amis.
Artemis Cooper interviewed Elizabeth several times over the years whilst she lived in Bungay, and met with many of her friends and family. She also had access to many of her personal documents. In the biography, she examines her thoughts and personality in the context of her novels and intriguing romantic relationships.
A Dangerous Innocence and books by Elizabeth Jane Howard will be available to buy on the night.
