New Men only cancer groups launch this Father’s Day

Here’s a present from Big C this Father’s Day; two new groups created especially for men to discuss their cancer concerns.

Norfolk’s cancer charity has launched the new groups following an increase in male attendance at two of its four regional Support and Information Centres.

As male visitors at the Yarmouth Centre has nearly doubled during the past year and the figure has nearly quadrupled at Kings Lynn, Big C realised there was a demand for a more specific service in an environment where men felt free to talk and share their concerns.

The groups have yet to be given a name, but men with any type of cancer at any stage are encouraged to attend the meetings based in or around Yarmouth and King’s Lynn.

Dave Coombes from Yarmouth said more men were using both centres and focus groups had shown a real need for men only meetings. “They’re informal, not medical, non-judgemental and an open environment where we hope men feel they can share their experiences and support each other,” said Dave.

Big C Support and Information Centres are calm and welcoming places for cancer patients, their carers, family and friends situated away from the hospital and anything clinical. The drop-in centres, situated in Norwich, King’s Lynn and Yarmouth and within the Louise Hamilton Centre in Gorleston, offer a range of services from a listening ear to practical help with finances, professional therapies and a variety of workshops.
