The Fisher Theatre in Bungay is encouraging local people to ‘Celebrate Your Suffolk’ on the county’s first ever Suffolk Day on Wednesday 21st June 2017.
During the day local primary school children will be invited to take part in free storytelling and drama workshop sessions on the theme of ‘The Stories of Suffolk’. Then from 6-8pm the theatre will open its doors to ‘Celebrate Your Suffolk’; a ticketed family event featuring singing, dancing, folk music, storytelling, short theatre performances, talks and a children’s treasure hunt. There will also be a balloon race and the first 20 children to arrive will each receive a free Lickety Twist ice lolly, handmade in Suffolk.
Local creative partnership Dramatic Impact is the driving force behind the Suffolk Day events. The husband-and-wife team are working closely with The Fisher Theatre and have secured the support of three thriving local businesses to make the day possible;
“We love living in Suffolk and Suffolk Day is such a fabulous idea we just had to do something to celebrate it. We wanted to involve the whole community and felt it was a chance to celebrate some of our amazing local businesses too.
We were over the moon when Lickety Ices, Fen Farm Dairy and The Fleece Inn all pledged their support so enthusiastically and we’re privileged to have them all on board.”
The schools’ storytelling and drama workshops will be run by Dramatic Impact who are experts at engaging children through hands-on activities specially devised to develop key creative and communication skills. Inspiring children and helping local schools to mark Suffolk Day in a meaningful way is an essential part of the Suffolk Day celebration.
The family event ‘Celebrate Your Suffolk’ will run from 6-8pm. The line-up includes the Waveney Youth Choir, Liz Lee Dance Studio, Fisher Youth Theatre Group, Dramatic Impact’s Harvey Salmon, Upshoot Theatre Company, talks by Terry and Chris Reeve plus performances by local musicians.
There’s also the chance to add your handprint to a ‘Become Your Suffolk’ mural while children can take part in a ‘Know Your Suffolk’ treasure trail. The event’s grand finale is a ‘Message from Suffolk’ balloon race, to be launched at 8pm.
Lickety Ices, one of the three Suffolk Day sponsors, is giving a free Lickety Twist lolly to the first twenty children to arrive at the event, which will have an informal and celebratory feel. Bex Spillings explains why the company wanted to be involved;

When it comes to flavours, we let the seasons do the talking – delicious strawberries and rhubarb arrive fresh from the Suffolk fields and our blackberries are handpicked from the local hedgerow. A Suffolk Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the wonderful ingredients on our doorstep and we are very proud to support it.”
Fen Farm Dairy is also sponsoring the day. Producers of raw dairy milk, buttermilk and cream, Fen Farm Dairy is famous for ‘Baron Bigod’, an unpasteurised brie style cheese which is sold throughout the UK and is a true Suffolk food hero. Dulcie Crickmore from Fen Farm says;
“We are proud and excited to be sponsoring the first ever Suffolk Day and looking forward to celebrating all that is great about our beautiful county.”
The Fleece Inn is a free house in the centre of Bungay which has been under new management for just over a year and is the third Suffolk Day sponsor. Manager Graeme Sims loves making local connections;
“We pride ourselves on sourcing the best produce from local suppliers were possible, whether it’s the delicious Baron Bigod from our friends at Fen Farm, Cleveleys Butchers in South Elmham or Cliff at Earsham Street Fish Company and not forgetting some fantastic local ales from Grain Brewery and St Peters.
All of our team are not just proud of our pub and the town, but of the whole Waveney Valley and are always ready to supply visitors with some interesting local knowledge. We are delighted to support the first ever Suffolk Day and we are looking forward to experiencing some of the entertainment on the day.”
The Suffolk Day events at The Fisher Theatre are designed to inspire young people while bringing together local families, businesses, performers and artists to celebrate not only the county’s vibrant heritage but its dynamic and exciting future!

Suffolk Day sponsor Fen Farm Dairy sells raw dairy milk, buttermilk, raw cream, Baron Bigod unpasteurised brie style cheese and raw cultured butter from their Milk Shed at the Farm in Bungay. There is also an online shop on their website which delivers throughout the UK. Fen Farm Dairy cheeses are sold to pubs, delicatessens, restaurants and major events nationwide. Last year they sold and delivered in excess of 25 tonnes of Baron Bigod throughout the UK. Local stockists include Earsham Street Deli, Bungay; Harleston Deli; Woodbridge Deli and Snape Maltings.
Suffolk Day sponsor The Fleece Inn is located on St Mary’s Street in the centre of Bungay. Parts of the building date back to the 15th century it was fully refurbished just over a year ago. The Fleece creates menus where the familiar and the comforting are offered alongside many creative and exciting dishes. All food is prepared on site and whenever possible they use local suppliers and the finest seasonal ingredients. There is also an upstairs function room perfect for parties and events.
