BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD AS FIVE OF OUR TEAMS  SEEK FURTHER GLORY

Although the Saturday league matches have now been concluded there is still some important hockey to be played, before we pull down the curtain on the 2014-15 season, with five of our teams in action over the coming weekend with all looking to build on their already successful seasons.

The club is hosting for the seventh successive year the East Club Minis or to give them their correct title the East Club IN2Hockey Championships. On Saturday the U12 Boys (from 10.30) and U10 Girls (from 1.25) will be in action and on Sunday it will be the turn of the U12 Girls (10.00) and U10 Boys (1.00). Magpies will be represented by their U10 and U12 Girls’ and U12 Boys’ teams following their successes in the recent Norfolk Championships. Please come along and cheer on our teams!

The winners and runners-up of the two U12 events will go on to represent the East in the national championships to be played at Beeston HC on Saturday 9 May.

Meanwhile on Sunday the U14 Girls and Men’s O50s will be back in England Hockey Championship action.

The U14 girls have won three and drawn one of their four Midland League 4 games thereby qualifying for the Midland Section Finals where is Pool B at Wallingford (near Oxford) they play Cambridge City (10.45), Wallingford (12.00) and Lichfield (2.30) with the Pool winners going through to the national finals at Lee Valley Hockey Centre on Sunday 10 May. Magpies’ squad: Millie Preece (captain), Rose Winter, Martha Lawrence, Lottie Summers, Anna Kilbourn, Holly Riches (GK), Mia King, Abi Rapkin, Keisha Hilaire, Emily Woollatt, Amelia Herschel-Shorland, Phoebe Eglington, Grace Collison, Julie Davy, Faith Reader with David Brook (coach) and Martin Reader (assistant coach). Meanwhile the Men’s O50s will be attempting to reach the final of the Men’s Cup for the third time in the past four seasons when they travel to play Barford Tigers (2.30). So far this season the team, skippered by Jon Aldridge and managed by Peter Dolton, have scored twenty goals and conceded eight in their four games. There is no doubt that they will need to be at their best to overcome Barford Tigers (respected opponents in national league days way back) who beat Barton Veterans 3-0 in the last round while Magpies defeated West Wilts 6-0. The final is being held at Lee Valley Hockey Centre on Sunday 3 May.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR TEAMS THIS WEEKEND

PRESS RELEASE
HARLESTON FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR
Harleston Magpies Hockey Club, who have hosted this event for over twenty years, have very reluctantly decided that they are unable to continue to do so following increasing concerns over the risks associated with the event. The club and Harleston Lions who have organised this event (with the help of Harleston Scouts until very recently) thank the many people and businesses who have supported them over the years and who have helped to raise a considerable amount of money for their causes.Magpies are keen to continue to make their facilities available for community fund raising activities and will be exploring opportunities for further co-operationwith Harleston Lions.

While the above regarding the Fireworks Spectacular is self-explanatory I would like to thank, on behalf of the organising committee, the many club members, parents and supporters who have helped to run the event on the night over the years. Without their support the event would not have been possible.

The fourth and very well attended Senior Club Awards Evening was held last Saturdayin the clubhouse preceded by a reception to enable club president Philippa Taylor and club chairman Murray Graham to thank all those who have helped to run the club during the season. This event and the Awards Evening were kindly organised by Philippa and Murray with the assistance of playing manager Tristan Baynes and club captains Louisa Greenacre and Adam Lascelles. Murray kindly presented the awards after the team captains had read out the citations. Thanks are also due to everyone who attended the Awards Evening and congratulations to the following winners at the end of another outdoor league season.

Other news and comment
a) Best wishes to Ewie Cumming following his recent appendectomy.

b) It is also best wishes to Kira Wooltorton following her injury sustained while captaining the U18s to their recent success at Lee Valley. Fortunately a MRI scan has shown that Kira did not damage her cruciate ligament but she has her knee in a brace pending physiotherapy.

c) A lot goes on behind the scenes at Weybread and it is a big ‘thank you’ to Philip Cobbald and David Cobbald for refixing the netting around the pitches (with some 350 cable ties), to John Pestell (Michelangelo) for helping me (Jack the Dripper) to paint the storage container, to George Hunter for preparing the grass pitches for the May Day Tournament and to David Cobbald and Mike Eastaugh for covering the kickboards on the water-based pitch with protective carpet.

With kind regards

Mike Denham
