Come and celebrate World Mental Health Day

The centre of Great Yarmouth will be filled with dance troupes, stilt walkers, face-painting and live music next weekend as a raft of local health organisations and charities join forces to mark World Mental Health Day.

The celebration event has been organised to raise awareness of the importance of looking after the mind while reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Taking place next Saturday (11 October 2014) in the Market Place between 11am and 3pm, it will offer something for everyone, including entertainments, information stalls and a range of activities for the whole family.

The day has been organised by service user forum Feedback, in partnership with a wide range of charities, NHS organisations and support groups from across the area served by HealthEast, the local clinical commissioning group.

It is hoped the event will be opened by Brandon Lewis MP, with Marlene Fairhead, Great Yarmouth mayor, also planning to attend.

Kevin Pull, coordinator with Feedback, which is funded by HealthEast, said: “We have organised this event to help raise awareness of the importance of good mental health, and the things which people can do to look after their minds as well as their bodies.

“There will be lots of entertainments taking place throughout the day, including the fantastic Bollywood Sparkles dance troupe, stilt walkers, live animals, face painting and live bands. Some of our service users who take part in theatre workshops will also be performing, with the emphasis kept firmly on fun throughout the day.

“Lots of partner organisations, such as Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, MIND, East Coast Community Healthcare, Stonham Housing, Family Action, Clinks Farm, Pohwer, Age UK and the Alzheimer’s Society, will also be on hand to give out information.

“We hope as many people as possible drop by, get their questions answered and help dispel some of the myths surrounding mental health issues while having fun at the same time.”
