Shakespeare’s golden touch is brought to the silver screen with community cinema events

A stunning season of film has hit screens in community venues across the Eastern region, marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Led by the BFI and the Film Audience Network, the project explores how filmmakers have interpreted, been inspired by, and adapted Shakespeare’s great works for the big screen.

Screenings of The Bard’s best loved comedies and tragedies are being presented by community cinema groups across the Eastern region, with support from arts and development charity Creative Arts East.

The cinema classics ‘West Side Story’ (with music and lyrics by Bernstein and Sondheim), ‘Henry V’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ (directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh) and ‘Richard III’ (starring Sir Ian McKellen) will be introduced by local film experts and followed by Q&A sessions, discussing the relationship between each film and our nation’s greatest playwright.

The series of screenings also features a special visit by director Richard Bracewell who will be introducing and discussing his film ‘Bill’, a family adventure and comedy from the creators of Horrible Histories) at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts. #shakespeareonfilm
