Dean of Norwich Cathedral visits specialist NHS centre

Patients receiving palliative care and specialist rehabilitation in Norwich have welcomed a visit from the Dean of Norwich Cathedral.

The Very Reverend Jane Hedges spent the afternoon at the Colman Centre, run by Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust (NCH&C), where she met patients and their families, and members of staff.

The site, on Unthank Road, brings together a number of specialist rehabilitation services for patients with complex disabilities which are the results of acquired brain injury, spinal injuries and limb loss, in addition to Priscilla Bacon Lodge, a specialist palliative unit which provides symptom management and end-of-life care.

During her visit, on Thursday, April 23, the Dean was taken around each unit, where she chatted with patients and staff. In addition; she was able to meet members of NCH&C’s chaplaincy team, who talked about their work and the place of chaplaincy within the hospital environment.

Helen Garrard, NCH&C Chaplain, said: “I think Jane’s visit had a positive impact on staff and patients. I hope it offered her an insight into some of the speciality and expertise that exists within NCH&C.

“It was a great privilege to welcome her to Colman Hospital to show her the extent of the work that goes on here.”

Revd Hedges, who was installed as Dean of Norwich Cathedral in June 2014, and is the first female Dean in the Cathedral’s 900 year history, said: “I was very pleased to be invited by the Chaplain to visit the units at the Colman Hospital. I have met some amazingly brave people, who remain positive even though they are going through difficult times, which is an inspiration to all of us.”
