Norwich HEART’s Digital Heritage Project adds a French flavour to Chamber Orchestra Anglia’s classical concert as they unite to bring archive film alive at the Hostry Festival

Norwich HEART’s Digital Heritage Project will be collaborating with Chamber Orchestra Anglia for the second time at this year’s Hostry Festival to present ‘From Norfolk to Normandy’, an evening of archive films accompanied by music performed by members of the Chamber Orchestra Anglia.

The performance is to take place in the atmospheric setting of the Hostry at Norwich Cathedral on Friday 25th October 2013 from 7pm to 9.30pm.

‘From Norfolk to Normandy’ will focus on the years surrounding the Second World War on both sides of the channel, revealing the impact of the war on the Home Front in Norfolk as well as their counterparts in Upper Normandy during enemy occupation. A selection of films from the UEA’s East Anglian Film Archive and the Rouen-based Memoire Audiovisuelle Haute-Normanide will be introduced by Jane Jarvis, Project Manager of the Digital Heritage Project, with a programme of music by both English and French composers, to be performed by nine members of Chamber Orchestra Anglia, conducted by Sharon Andrea Choa.

The evening will begin in style with a champagne reception at 7pm, with the concert commencing at 7.30pm. These partners’ first collaboration resulted in a sold-out performance at the Guildhall in Norwich last year.

“We are really pleased to be working with the Chamber Orchestra Anglia once again and what a wonderful way to bring some of the films of the archive alive! These cross-channel archives hold some very moving images of war captured by amateur filmmakers and offer a tremendous insight into wartime events, and the effect on ordinary people. Screening them to a special programme of live music from 20^th century composers including Messiaen, Ravel, Elgar and Stravinsky will really enhance the emotion of the events caught on camera nearly 80 years ago and make for a fascinating evening”.

The Digital Heritage Project has been delivered as a cross-channel partnership part funded by Interreg IVA over the last 3 years, with HEART teaming up with the UEA’s East Anglian Film Archive and Rouen based screen agency, Pole Image Haute-Normandie who run MAHN.

The project’s website, archivealive.org was launched in October 2012 and showcases a moving image timeline of digitised archive films from across the East of England (Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire) and Upper Normandy in France, from as far back as 1896 to the 1980s. The films have been digitised to compare and contrast our shared social history and heritage and thanks to this online resource can now be enjoyed and accessed by a much wider audience. The films include both amateur and professionally shot footage, revealing how the lives of local people and communities have changed over the last 100 years in regards to work, travel, recreation and celebration, amongst many other things.
