A five a side football tournament to promote physical health and mental wellbeing takes place on Wednesday, 1st June at Bury St Edmunds rugby club at The Haberden, Southgate Green.

This is the tenth year the tournament has taken place, organised by Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust for service users, volunteers and staff. Seventy five per cent of those taking part are users of mental health services. There will be up to16 teams.

The organiser, Jack Karney, is currently seeking sponsors and two referees. Anyone who thinks they can help can contact Jack Karney at the Trust on tel: 01284 352665.

Jack is a housing support worker for the Trust’s rehab and recovery service in West Suffolk. He said: “We’re unusual in that we invite youth services as well as mental health services. The aim is to integrate everyone in the local community with partner agencies, break down barriers and the stigma of mental illness and promote sport for all. Physical exercise in the outdoors is particularly beneficial for mental health.”

There are two leagues, one for those who are more competitive and the other for those less so and there will be two trophies. Each team will play at least four games as the event runs from 10.30 until 15.00. Participants are asked to bring a packed lunch although, as an alternative, there is a shop nearby.
