The public will be given the chance to learn more about dementia when Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust hosts an open day at Hammerton Court, in Norwich, on Friday, 13 December 2013.
Those attending the event from 10am-2.30pm will also receive a copy of ‘Remember Me’, a 30-minute film produced by Nudge Productions, which provides an insight into the journey of a mother and daughter and their changing roles and experiences as dementia affects their lives.
Representatives from NHS dementia research, Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK, Home Instead, Norfolk Libraries and British Red Cross and other organisations will be participating in the event offering information, advice and activities for people to participate in.
The day will also provide people with dementia and those caring for a relative or friend with dementia with the opportunity to get involved with a working and support group that informs others of the lived experience of dementia. There will also be dementia awareness and cognitive stimulation therapy taster sessions.
Lisa Breame, dementia trainer, said: “We hope that people from all walks of life, whether they have dementia, provide care for or support a family member or friend with dementia, work in a care setting or would simply like to know more about dementia will come along.”

- Estimates suggest that the number of people with dementia in Norfolk will rise from around 13,200 in 2010 to over 20,6000 in 2025, with as many as 60% thought to have the disease but not having been diagnosed (Norfolk and Suffolk Dementia Alliance 2011).
- There are currently over 12,000 thousand people living with dementia in Suffolk (Alzheimer’s Society 2013).
- Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services across Norfolk and Suffolk. The Trust came into being on January 1, 2012, with the merger of Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS and Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. As well as providing mental health services across the two counties, the Trust has drug and alcohol teams and provides support for people with learning difficulties in some areas.
