Cricket season is upon us!

On the 1st of June, the Champions Trophy began, which marks the beginning of the cricket season. The BBC is airing all of the games throughout the course of the next few weeks; the series will culminate at The Oval ground in London for an exciting final.

Cricket is an ancient sport with a rich history in Britain. There are a myriad of ways to get involved. Websites such as useyourlocal.com allow you to search for the closest pub showing the cricket matches, but we expect The Murderers, Rileys on Magdalen Street and the rest of the usual suspects to be among them. Pull up a chair, share the jovial sporting atmosphere with your local community and get involved!

For those looking to heighten the tension even further, bet365 offer cricket betting and the latest in cricket news. With daily updated articles, you can be fully informed on the bowlers and batters both internationally and domestically. Cricket can be turned into an exciting full day event even if you are not playing!

However, if you’d rather participate than spectate, Norfolk Cricket Board is encouraging adults of all ages to get involved with coaching through their training programmes. The organisation works closely with the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and offer a wide range of courses suitable for working with a variety of age ranges. So far it has received positive feedback. Coaches are a source of inspiration and motivation for many young players; they are crucial to maintaining sports within our local communities. If you are a motivating and passionate individual interested in meeting like-minded people you can view the full range of courses here.

Great night at Weybourne Road. All Star Cricket a great success, and good to see new & old faces at adult coaching too!

June is the ‘This Girl Can’ month at Active Norfolk. This global campaign aims to get more women into sport; so Active Norfolk are particularly encouraging women who are aspiring to be coaches but might have been put off in the past, for any reason. Sports Coach UK highlighted that women only account for around 30% of the coaching workforce and 75% of women wish they were more active but are put off by fear of being judged. So if you are a woman in Norfolk who has always wished to coach cricket or any other sport, June is the month for you!

Alongside this is the nationwide All Stars Cricket Programme, which is expecting to recruit 50,000 more children through the month of June in concurrence with the Champions Trophy. So far this programme has been a huge success throughout the county. It is targeted at children between the ages of five and eight and consists of eight weekly sessions in local cricket clubs. Each session focuses on a different skill related to cricket. For each skill, the children earn a badge and they also receive a cricket goody bag. The programmes are running all throughout the summer across Norfolk and the nearest programme to you can be found on the ECB website.
