Prior to this year’s event the local community is being urged to get involved in helping to make decorations to be displayed in the street for the event. Mardi Gras organisers, Seachange Arts are appealing for donations of old Christmas decorations, fairy lights, Christmas trees, fake foliage and fake flowers to transform the street for Mardi Gras.
“This year Mardi Gras will be themed as the struggle of spring versus winter” explained Laurie Miller-Zutshi of organisers Seachange Arts “This is why we are appealing for donations of these items as they will be transformed into spring and winter displays to decorate the street. There will also be a window dressing competition on the day with some of the businesses on King Street decorating their windows especially for the event.”
The donated items will then be transformed during an artist led drop-in workshops where the local community will have the opportunity to get involved and get creative by making decorations for Mardi Gras. The workshops take place at Maritime House, 25 Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth on Thursday 10th February from 10-4pm, Tuesday 15th February from 10-4pm and Thursday 24th February 10-4pm.
Donations of decorations for the event can be made by dropping off suitable items to Seachange Arts offices, Maritime House, 25 Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth by Monday 14th February or by bringing them along to the workshop sessions. For further information, please contact Laurie on 01493 846187 or email [email protected]
The King Street Mardi Gras takes place on Tuesday 8th March from 4-6pm. The event will feature entertainment, food and customs with an international theme, both in the street and inside the event’s tented area on King Street.
