A GROUND-BREAKING ceremony took place recently for two new medium-sized industrial units at Beacon Park, in Gorleston-on-Sea, which continues the trend in boosting the local economy.

The units, being developed by Great Yarmouth Borough Council, will be targeted for sale to businesses in the growing energy industry and, once completed, could bring up to 100 jobs to the park.

Beacon Park is part of the Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft (New Anglia) Enterprise Zone, which focuses on growing energy-related business within the East of England Energy Zone.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council, the owner and developer of the premier park, has been investing £8m to build more than 100,000 sq ft of floorspace in four phases, showing confidence in the strength of the local economy.

Now the borough council is investing further funds, together with £3m of Government infrastructure funding, to develop seven more speculative units, as well as key infrastructure, in further phases.

Phase four comprises two medium industrial units, measuring 25,000 sq ft and 12,000 sq ft, of which about 10 per cent in each is office space. The contract price is about £2.8m, financed through both funding packages.

The high-specification development includes secure vehicle turning, loading and unloading areas, dedicated car parking space and generous levels of landscaping.

Today, Cllr Trevor Wainwright, the council leader, and Cllr Bernard Williamson, the cabinet member for transformation and regeneration, met on-site for the traditional ground-breaking ceremony, along with Edward Moore, of construction contractor ELM Contracts, and Eunice Edwards, of New Anglia LEP.

Cllr Wainwright said: “These two units, which should be completed by the end of the year and mirror the units completed around Christmas, are the latest phase of development at Beacon Park, which is fast becoming a key hub for the growing energy sector and providing space for businesses to create jobs.

“Millions of pounds from the private and public sectors, including a significant contribution from the borough council, are being pumped into Beacon Park, representing huge confidence in the local economy, the skills of the workforce, the port and business park facilities, and the Enterprise Zone.

“This year is the 50th anniversary of supporting offshore operations from Great Yarmouth, so it would be ideal to help celebrate that by welcoming new occupiers to these two units.”

Chris Starkie, managing director of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This is a great example of the public and private sector working together to attract businesses and create jobs and testament to the growing success of Beacon Park and the Enterprise Zone that this area is being developed so fast.”

Edward Moore, director of ELM Contracts, said: “ELM Contracts is delighted to commence work to construct these two units, having previous completed their two sister units nearby. ELM Contracts is a Great Yarmouth-based construction company and is pleased to be part of development at Beacon Park.”
