Halesworth residents are unlatching their gates and throwing open their gardens to the public on Saturday 20 June 2015.

In different parts of the town, 15 beautiful private gardens will be open to visitors. Three other gardens are included in the tour: Halesworth Library Garden, Halesworth Memorial Garden & Hooker Arboretum and Tilly’s Café Garden in the Market Place, which is open to anyone eating at the café.

Adding to the festive spirit on Open Gardens Day, brilliantly coloured pennants will mark the open gardens. The flags have been created and generously donated by Adrienne and Andrew Smiley of local firm Shell Shock Fireworks.

Tea and cakes will be served in Linda Gray’s garden at 6 Hill Farm Road where there will also be a plant sale. More plants will be on sale at Magnolia House in Station Road along with a raffle of splendid prizes, many of them donated by traders in the town.

Entrance to all the gardens is by programme at a cost of £5 per programme per person with children free and proceeds to Air Ambulance. Including information and a map of the gardens, the programmes will be on sale in advance at Halesworth Library and on the day at all any participating gardens. The private gardens will be open from midday until 5pm: look out for the marker pennants and balloons.

Halesworth Open Garden Day has been organised by the volunteer committee of Halesworth in Bloom, which is coordinated by Tamsyn Imison. She said: “We are enormously grateful to all those who are opening their gardens to visitors. Showing a garden to the public is a tremendous commitment and involves a lot of hard work, so a big thank you to all those who have taken on the challenge.”

Volunteers are most welcome: to help beforehand (putting up posters and collecting raffle prizes) and on the day (to welcome visitors, serve teas, sell plants and raffle tickets). Anyone willing to volunteer should contact Tamsyn Imison by phone on (01986) 873354 or 07717 474877 or by email on [email protected].

Halesworth in Bloom

In 2014, Anglia in Bloom recognised the exceptional range of flowering plants, trees and wild spaces in and around Halesworth with a Gold Award for the town. By working together with residents and traders in the town, Halesworth in Bloom’s many dedicated volunteers have created a wonderful floral environment in the town, and inspired community spirit and participation.

In the Thoroughfare, for example, traders have decorated their frontages with a colourful selection of flowering plants. Halesworth’s nationally acclaimed glass engraver Lesley Pyke has donated a stunning engraved bowl for the most attractive frontage. Voting forms will be available in July from any of the businesses in the town.

In 2015, two Anglia in Bloom judges are visiting Halesworth on the afternoon of Friday 17 July. Tamsyn is encouraging the people of Halesworth to make sure the town is looking beautiful for the judges, who are both horticultural experts. She said: “We are appealing to everyone who cares about Halesworth to pull out all the stops to make sure the town is looking absolutely brilliant in July. We won a gold award in 2014 so we can do it again in 2015!
