Halesworth Scarecrow Hunt

HALESWORTH SCARECROW HUNT EXPECTED TO SURPRISE

Some details of the 5th annual Halesworth Scarecrow Hunt are being kept secret this year says organiser Karen Prime because of the reactions to the gory detail of a scarecrow Sweeney Todd inside the town’s barber and a Mrs Lovett in a blood-soaked pie shop outside a restaurant last year.

Mrs Prime, proprietor of Edwards Restaurant, is advising townsfolk that this year; “it may be a little offensive if you have no sense of humour, but the kids will love it, and that is what is most important. I will not apologise now, during or after.”

The event begins on Saturday the 25th of October and runs until Saturday the 1st November, over the schools’ half-term holidays and Halloween.

Over 70 scarecrows made by local people and businesses will be in the town’s Thoroughfare and Market Place. All money raised is going to the Halesworth Christmas lights. The event has grown in popularity year on year and is one of many community-led efforts to promote the town as a shopping, meeting and tourism destination and counter economic austerity and declining footfall in rural market towns.

Everyone can take part in the treasure hunt where selected shops have letters hidden in their windows that make up seasonal words. Those that solve the puzzle are entered into a prize draw with the grand prize the opportunity to switch on the Halesworth Town’s Christmas lights set for Saturday 29th November. Entry forms cost £1 and are available from Edwards Restaurant or the town library, both in the Thoroughfare.

On Saturday 25th October there will also be a tombola stall. The first Saturday and Sunday also have the final events of the Halesworth Arts Festival starting October 11th.

Judging the scarecrows to award the annual cup will be actor Bernard Hill who is no stranger to blood and gore in his role as King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Also judging the displays will be Dame Tamsyn Imison, chair of community group Halesworth In Bloom, which recently achieved a gold award for Halesworth in the small town category in the 2014 Anglia In Bloom.
