Halesworth wins Anglia in Bloom Gold!

Residents and businesses in the north Suffolk town of Halesworth are celebrating the town’s Anglia in Bloom Gold Award.

The awards were announced at a special ceremony in Gorleston on 9 September 2014. The town also brought home two other awards. Woottens Roundabout won the award for Best Drought / Sustainable Garden and Beech House won the award for Best Garden for Special Needs.

Tamsyn Imison, Halesworth in Bloom Coordinator, said: “Halesworth’s Gold Award is a truly wonderful community effort and everyone involved made a huge difference. Thank you to you all.”

In addition to praising Woottens Roundabout and Beech House, the judges commented very favourably on the “excellent work at the United Reformed Church Garden”.

The judges highlighted the planting in the town including the choice of plants at the roundabouts, the town centre’s colourful planters and the herb planters for residents’ use.

The town’s lovely residential gardens, Tilly’s Garden Tea Rooms and the involvement of World Land Trust also received positive mentions in the judges’ report.

Tamsyn said: “None of this would have been possible without support and active help from so many people. This award will make a significant difference to our town, particularly if we can sustain and build on the success. Let’s keep focused on the big improvements we have planned for year.”

Halesworth was judged in the Anglia in Bloom small town category.

NOTES

Halesworth’s Anglia in Bloom Gold Award is a just reward for two years of planning, hard work, creative thinking – and fun.

The seed for Halesworth in Bloom began back in 2007 when Tamsyn took pity on the neglected planters in the Thoroughfare. She got together with Halesworth and District Gardeners Society and planted the containers with colourful annuals. This caught people’s attention and before long some of the Halesworth Councillors and even the Town Clerk were involved. A next step was to enter Anglia in Bloom.

Tamsyn remembers taking the decision to enter the competition: “It was a daunting prospect and one that – if successful – would need commitment not just from a few individuals, but from the whole town.” There are now more than 100 people involved in different projects, and there are few people in the town that don’t know about Halesworth in Bloom.
