PETER HOGG
The many friends of Peter will have been shocked and deeply saddened by the news of his sudden death last week in Adelaide. A post-mortem is being held to determine the cause of his death. Peter went to live in Australia in March of last year with his partner Jenny. He was brought up in Zimbabwe and played hockey 33 times for his country including against England at Eaton Park in Norwich in August 1980. In 1985 he re-joined his parents in England and he joined Norwich Exiles making an immediate impact on the local hockey scene with his speed and skill. He then played for Cambridge City in the national league and after a spell with Dereham he joined Magpies and in the 1995/6 season he hit 14 national league goals for the club mainly when coming off the bench to strike penalty corners which was then allowed.  Peter, who always wished he had joined Magpies earlier, subsequently went on to coach Ipswich and Dereham as well as having a spell as a full time coach in Manchester where he met Jenny. He was a friend to many and their condolences will go out to Jenny, his mother and brother and the rest of his family on their great loss. Before the Men’s O50s game at Ipswich on Sunday both teams stood in memory of Peter.

MEN’S O50s PULL OFF A FINE WIN IN A FLUCTUATING MATCH AGAINST IPSWICH

The Men’s O50s were away on Sunday up against a strong Ipswich side in the second round of the England Hockey Masters Cup and the early stages did not look promising for them and one could say that about the entire first half except by the interval Magpies were three goals ahead! Goalkeeper Murray Graham made a good save to prevent Ipswich taking the lead and after 20 minutes Phil Cobbald fired in a penalty corner to put them ahead against the run of play. Five minutes later and after more Ipswich pressure Phil finished off a sparkling move from left to right with a shot high into the net and on the cusp of half time skipper Jon Aldridge, who was in sparkling midfield form, created space with his enviable stickwork. He passed to Phil just inside the Ipswich half who found Jerry Herod on the edge of the circle and he skilfully drew the goalkeeper before scoring. But by the twentieth minute of the second half Ipswich were level at 3-3 with the ever-prolific Andy Cook (fortunately back in midfield for much of the game) with two of their goals. Things now looked bad for Magpies but within two minutes forward Bob Skinner (despite a hamstring injury) poked the ball home off the keeper’s pads and two minutes later Clyde Camburn (playing his first game in three years) found Phil in the circle for his third. Andy Law then made it 6-3 to Magpies (from seven shots!) but there was still time for Andy Cook to score two more for Ipswich in the very last minute. What a game and what a win for Magpies! Manager Peter Dolton and his squad will play Bury St Edmunds at home in the next round on Sunday 29 November (12.00).

In the late game on Saturday (by which time the rain had fortunately eased) the Men’s 3rds played league leaders IES 2nds and they put in a fine performance especially in the first half. Gavin Cole gave them an early lead from 12 inches out after good work by Stuart Field who had a splendid game in midfield alongside Jon Aldridge before Jon was rested in the second half with Sunday in mind.  Gavin added a second before Phil Cobbald converted a penalty stroke which sorely tested the netting! Magpies eased off a little after the break before Greg Jagger powered in the fourth at a penalty corner and shortly afterwards goalkeeper Jordan Wiseman pulled off a fine save. IES then got a deserved consolation before with the whistle gone for full time Tristan Hipper made it 5-1 with a typically firm penalty corner strike. Skipper Matt Brand and his team are now just one point behind the leaders at the top of their league and this coming Saturday they are away to Norwich City 4ths (4.00).

Meanwhile the Ladies’ 4ths were getting back to winning ways when they travelled to play Norwich City 2nds and they pulled off a really good 5-1 win. By half time they were 2-0 up with both goals coming from the in-form Laura Tibbenham. City pulled a goal back just after the break before Sophie Matsell made it 3-1. Laura then completed her hat-trick (I will sportingly credit it as such despite my definition of the feat!) with Anna Harrod adding the fifth. This Saturday Treacle Griffin and her team have a really tough game when they host league leaders Norwich Dragons 3rds (3.30). Also away from home the Ladies’ 1sts got a good point after a 2-2 draw against high-flying Cambridge City following goals by Lizzie Clymer and Lauren Barber, who converted a penalty stroke, only for City – who had earlier taken the lead – to get one for themselves a few minutes before the final whistle. This weekend the squad have their only Sunday match of the season when away from home they have the tough task of trying to hold league leaders Slough (12.30) who last Saturday beat Chelmsford 9-0.

Meanwhile the Men’s 2nds were on their travels scoring in the last minute of the game to draw 3-3 with Cambridge University 2nds with Simon Hipwell finding the net in his first game of the season following his shoulder injury. At 3-1 down goals by Thomas Ridley and Myles King, with the late effort, salvaged a point for Magpies for whom Jake Sewell was MOTM. This Saturday the team entertain Felixstowe (12.00) in a must-win game. The Ladies’ 6ths were rewarded for getting up early for their 10.15 game at Gresham’s School against Evergreens 2nds with Georgie Cantrell getting the only goal of the game. The Girls’ Developmentgot their third successive win with a 5-0 (Kitty Taylor 2, Georgie Garden, Amy Collison, Ellie Pope) victory over Norwich Dragons. The Men’s 6ths drew 1-1 (Lewis Belsey) away to Norwich Dragons 5ths and the Men’s 5ths lost 5-1 away to Bury 4ths.

At home on Saturday the Ladies’ 3rds found the Pelicans 2nds’ goalkeeper in good form as they battled to a 3-0 win with goals by Charlotte Rourke-Beasley (2) and Millie Preece. Sophie Child was MOTM while Katie Kinsella was also in good form with her running and stick skills. The Ladies’ 2nds were next into action against St Albans 2nds and after taking the lead through Tor Findlay early in the second half they deserved at least a point from the game. But St Albans equalised when their penalty corner strike took a deflection on its way into the net and five minutes from time they got the winner from another penalty corner. The Boys’ Development beat Dereham 4-2 with goals by Jake Caston, Jude Pottruff (2) and Tom Caston while also at home the Men’s 4ths drew 1-1 with IES 4ths. Toby Hughes put them ahead in the first half while IES equalised after the interval through a penalty stroke.

On Sunday it was like old times at Weybread with the Men’s 1sts playing a national league game in front of a large crowd.  Magpies played some of their best hockey of the season in the first half against Southgate and had chances to take the lead but after the interval Southgate launched attack after attack on their way to a 4-0 lead. Magpies hit back, much to the delight of their supporters, with goals by Robbie Kinsella and Ben Wright before Southgate added a fifth in the last few seconds. One of the highlights of the second half was seeing Richard Larkin not only denying a Southgate forward an open goal chance but also robbing him of the ball! This Saturday Magpies are home to Bromley & Beckenham (2.00).

In other EH competitions on Sunday pride of place went to the U16 Girls who beat Norwich Dragons 13 -1 with goals by Tor Findlay (3), Abby Gooderham (2), Mia King (2), Lauren Rowe (3) and Anna Tighe (3). The U14 Boys drew 4-4 (Matt Bensly, Will Donsworth, Jolyon Summers (2)) with Norwich City while the U14 Boys had a rare off-day going down 5-0 to Norwich City.

OTHER NEWS AND COMMENT

Mark Wheelhouse has decided to re-join Ipswich HC due in no small part to his work, home and family commitments (which are in the Ipswich area) preventing him any longer from attending training on a regular basis in order to compete for a first team place. Mark has served the club with distinction (and with good humour albeit with helpful advice to umpires on occasions!) both on and off the field of play and he captained the 1sts for four seasons with great success culminating with last season’s promotion. I know he leaves us with our thanks for his services to the club and with our best wishes to him and wife Lizzie and their son Noah for the future.

Congratulations to James ‘Tiger’ Brice of Countess Wells Breeding on being voted Stockman of the Year at the national pig awards. Tiger is assistant manager and head of farrowing at the unit in Suffolk.

Tracy Reeve has stood down as the chairman of the Fund Raising & Social Committee. During her time in the role (in at least two spells) she gave committed leadership to the committee with this year’s 80th Anniversary Ball the highlight of many events. Tracy had kindly stayed on in an acting capacity following the AGM. Thank you Tracy for all your hard work as chairman over the years. She has kindly been succeeded by Katrina Sitch and Andy Johnson and I know they will look for the support of as many members as possible with the club’s social programme starting as below.
