Health trust gets Fakenham families jumping for joy

Families in Fakenham have been getting fit and having fun during a six week course run by local health visitors.

The Jumping for Joy programme, organised by the Fakenham Health Visiting Team from Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust (NCH&C), was created for parents and under-fives to take part in healthy activities and exercise together. Due to its popularity the team are now working to secure funding in the hope that the course can carry on.

Among the range of activities included in the programme were; team games, football skills, a mini assault course, and play on an inflatable runway, enabling lots of bouncing and jumping.

The project was supported by Fakenham Sports Centre, which provided the venue, equipment and an instructor free of charge. Healthy drinks and snacks were provided at the end of each of the 45-60 minute sessions by Tesco.

The course was devised as part of the national Building Community Capacity (BCC) initiative, which has seen NCH&C’s health visiting teams across the county organising community events for families with children aged under-five, so they can get more active, boost wellbeing and give their children the best possible start in life.

This year the initiative has seen the introduction of a wide range of events including buggy walks, breastfeeding support, an introduction to weaning, and a multiple birth support for group.

Elaine Bennett, Health Visitor, said: “We have had some really positive feedback about the programme, with parents saying they had had great fun; it had helped their child’s physical development; and they had loved taking part in a sporting activity with their child.

“Parents also said they would like for the programme to continue, so the plan now is for us to put a business case forward to Norfolk County Council and Active Norfolk to try to secure some ongoing funding.”
