Romance, scandal, battles, victories & a hero’s death – an epic story that began in Norfolk.

“It’s time to bring a Norfolk hero’s epic story alive to a new generation”, says Tim Bishop, head of The Forum, in Norwich.

“Horatio Nelson’s story has everything. The Norfolk boy made good who saved his country and died at the height of his success.

“A passionate affair with Lady Hamilton, in one of history’s most scandalous romances, and a Boy’s Own story of courage and daring.”

A new, four week exhibition starts at The Forum on Monday 5 August exploring the sensational life and dramatic death of our great Norfolk hero.

Nelson’s County, in The Forum’s Fusion Gallery, runs from Mon 5 to Sat 31 Aug and tells this incredible story using film, pictures and historic artefacts.

The story of Lord Horatio Nelson started in a Norfolk village

On display at The Forum is the funeral drape used at Nelson’s state funeral in 1806, on loan from Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service (NMAS).

Steve Miller, the head of NMAS, said:

“We are delighted to lend this exciting summer holiday exhibition the drape from the carriage which carried Nelson’s coffin through the streets of London.

“It is the first time the drape has been shown in Norwich and we are pleased that it is on show at The Forum, in the heart of Norwich.”

For the first two days of the exhibition – Mon 5 and Tue 6 Aug –  there will be FREE nautical themed activities for children, the opportunity to meet “Nelson” and hear some tall, sea-faring tales.

And throughout the four week exhibition there will be talks about Nelson from local experts. See The Forum’s website for details.

The Forum has worked closely with the Nelson Museum, in Great Yarmouth and many others to make this exhibition possible.

Tim Bishop, CEO of the Forum, said,

“This is only the start. Our goal is to link up all the Nelson sites in Norfolk and celebrate to the full the life of our own authentic Norfolk hero.”
