Ice Age Brecks

Date: 23 April 2016

Time: 09:30 – 17:00
Location: The Carnegie Room, Thetford, IP24 2DS

Ever wondered how the rocks, rivers, hills, sand and soil of the Brecks developed? ‘Ice Age Brecks’ is an opportunity to find out more about the deep history of this distinctive landscape in Norfolk and Suffolk.

From verdant forests to chilly tundra, from hippopotami to woolly mammoths, the Brecks area has seen great changes in its landscape and wildlife over the last 500,000 years. This Day School will focus on the contribution that successive warm and cold periods have made to life and landscape in the area. We will introduce you to the evidence for environmental change, not forgetting to weave in the story of earliest human occupation.

The Day School is the second in a series of three. It will include specialist presentations in the morning by geologists Dr Peter Allen and Tim Holt-Wilson. This will be followed by a field trip (by coach and on foot) to discover some key sites; we will be assisted by flint-knapping specialist John Lord. It will be open to anyone interested in the subject. You will need to bring suitable outdoor clothing and a packed lunch with you.

We hope this event will open up a new dimension of understanding for you, and so contribute to a greater appreciation of the role that the physical landscape – sediments, soils, landforms and water – makes to the biodiversity and history of this fascinating natural area.
