St-Johns-Church,-Ilketshall

Church enthusiast, raconteur, and prolific writer of church guidebooks, Roy Tricker, will be giving an illustrated talk entitled

‘In Praise of Old Churches’

at St John’s Church, Ilketshall, on Wednesday 18th September, at 7:30pm.

Fascinated by old Churches, their history, their stories ….?   Then, ‘this is for you’, say organisers Lynne Morton and Rosemary Watkin.

Tickets for the event (£5), to include light refreshments and a free raffle for a bottle of wine, are available from Lynne on 01986 781240,  Rosemary on 01986 781225, or on the door.

Like all parish churches, St John’s has many treasures and many stories to tell – it has, for instance, stonework given by the future King Edward VII; one of the tallest banner stave lockers in England; an exquisite stained glass window, by Jones and Willis, of the church’s patron, St John the Baptist; and one of only three Royal Arms of William IV in Suffolk – plus a series of unusual cusps carved on the roof timbers at the division of nave and chancel, which are probably the remnant of a  canopy of honour over the rood.
