Living Well: Helping cancer patients to live well.

Norfolk’s Big C’s special open event to be held on November 7, 2015

Understanding what you can do to improve your health and well-being both as a cancer patient or following treatment is the theme of a day packed with information run by the Big C, Norfolk’s cancer charity.

Entitled “Living Well, with and after cancer,” the free all day workshops and practical presentations on November 7, 2015, cover a diverse subject range and are designed to address some of the many questions that arise before, during and after treatment. Can I continue my exercise or have a massage? What foods will give me energy? Which ones should I avoid eating? Will my hair grow back? I find sleep difficult; Where can I find  financial help to pay my bills as I cannot work? I feel lonely now I have finished treatment.

This day is all about ensuring that people have the best information for the situations they face and can meet specialists in many different areas, including food, nutrition, carers, physiotherapy, insurances and welfare. An expert is on hand to help young people facing cancer.

It was originally started seven years ago, as developments through research and improvement in treatments, coupled with early diagnosis, meant more people were surviving their cancers.  This rise in the number of cancer survivors has created an increased demand for different resources. The event has expanded to include information for anyone at any stage of cancer, of any age, irrespective of the form of their cancer, explained Norwich Centre manager Jill Chapman. “It is a day packed with information, the chance to meet and talk to people representing many organisations who can really help people live better and healthier, as well as offer support to those who help care for them. Everyone should come along.”

A programme of activities beginning at 10.30am includes a seated Zumba session, food demonstrations and advise on diet as well as practical sessions on coping with anxiety, how to find relevant insurances and dealing with work related issues. There will be complimentary hand massages as well as hospital dieticians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists and other specialists on hand.

Research shows that early diagnosis of cancer increases the survival rate of those with the illness. In Norfolk, statistics published by Cancer Research UK reveal a 68.5% survival rate across all types of cancer, a figure that is predicted to rise.

With this comes the rise in need for different kinds of information as patients may develop long term effects from treatment, and encounter potential side effects from the life-giving treatments.

The event will be held at the Big C Centre at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Saturday November 7, 2015. Entry and participation in the workshops is free, no booking is required, but visitors should remember that the £2 hospital parking charge per day still applies.
