MANNINGTON GARDENS SUMMER VISITS 2015

MANNINGTON GARDENS SUMMER VISITS

Now the garden visiting season is in full swing and the roses are at their best but the recent colder weather may be an advantage in that they may last longer and even some of the old varieties could still be blooming well into July and modern roses and shrubs later.

On many open days you will find extra entertainment in the form of walks and talks in the gardens or the chance to see inside the Hall with short tours and an introduction to its fascinating history.

The gardens and surrounding countryside have much to delight at all times of the year and the Greedy Goose tearooms will welcome you even on wet days. As always they feature local seasonal food with Cromer crab sandwiches, jams made with elderflowers and rose petals as well as many delicious cakes.

This year the building next door to the tearooms houses some exhibition material so there is something to do when the showers come.  One exhibition prepared by local historians is about the Rev Robert Walpole, another shows churches with Walpole family associations from all over Britain and a further panel tells something about the history of house and garden.

A few years ago the water lilies were reorganised and this year sees them at their charming best around the moat in front of the hall.

Events throughout the year include a Garden Party in aid of the local  Choral society who will be entertaining visitors on 4th July with some music for  American Independence Day; on 8th August the Rain or Shine theatre with The Tempest; on the 16th a day for all the family with Fairy Tales and Fables – trails in the grounds, storytelling and displays in the Hall and some special competitions with prizes all in aid of Norfolk hospices and in September the Charity Day when both floors of the  hall are open and lots of  activities take place in the grounds.

The Countryside officer provides information and updates on wild life sightings  –  visitors may be lucky and see the otters, spotted flycatchers, kingfisher or  unusual orchids but if not there are there are many other birds and flowers to delight together with trees including those in the arboretum of native species.

The boardwalk crosses a meadow to a wheelchair accessible bird hide.

If you want to stay longer a holiday cottage may be available or contact ambers bell tents.
