The Merry Opera Company brings Christopher Cowell’s new translation of Puccini’s much loved opera La bohéme to Beccles Public Hall for one night only at 7.30pm on Friday 12th February 2016, as part of its professional tour across Southern England.

La bohéme, one of the greatest romances in opera, is a captivating tale of the comedy of everyday life. In a coincidence that can befall any one of us, a chance meeting leads to a joyful, passionate and ultimately desperate love affair. Through this heart breaking story the bubbling, carefree exuberance of four young, penniless, Latin Quarter students, matures into moments of jealousy and anger, turning finally to real shock at the premature death of Rodolfo’s first love, the beautiful Mimi.

Director Christopher Cowell created this translation especially for Merry Opera. His international career spans the USA, Denmark, Portugal and France and he has directed his own adaptations for Covent Garden and Glyndebourne.

The young, up and coming Music Director and conductor, Harry Sever joins Merry Opera for the first time. A graduate of the Guildhall School Of Music and Drama, he has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Barbican.

The Merry Opera Company which, “has a nice line in off-beat touring shows” (Opera Now), was founded in 2010 to tour professional productions in modern English. For opera lovers, the shows are true to the core of the original and bring fresh interpretations of classics works. For those new to opera, the shows offer an understandable, interesting and enjoyable introduction to a genre that is often perceived as difficult to get into. Merry Opera’s tours of Troy Boy (Kit Hesketh-Harvey’s adaptation of La Belle Hélène), La Traviata, the Magic Flute and The Barber Of Seville have met with critical success. The company toured La Traviata to Malaysia in 2012. Merry Opera’s dramatised production of Handel’s Messiah with just 12 singers has been attracting standing ovations since it first tour in 2011.
