Gardens in July are reaching their summer peak with borders overflowing with the widest range of plants in full flower.

The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) has 15 gardens opening during the month throughout Norfolk so you will have ample opportunities to wallow in the sights and scents of some glorious floral displays. Your visit will also help provide vital funds for the charities the NGS supports,

Highlighted here are three gardens opening again for the NGS after several years rest and one first timer!

Bergh Apton Manor

Sunday 5th July

Bergh Apton Manor in Bergh Apton NR15 1BL has arguably the best lawns in Norfolk and many visitors sample its delights by walking barefoot! The impressive walled gardens are full of colour this month with formal edged borders, a pond and summerhouse where you can admire the views!

The Wicken

Sunday 12th July

The Wicken at Castle Acre PE32 2BP has not one but three walled gardens with a wide range of planting styles on view in over 6 acres of gardens. There is also a woodland garden complete with a stumpery full of ferns and hostas.

Kettle Hill

Sunday 19th July

Kettle Hill at Blakeney NR25 7PN has developed several new features since it last opened for the NGS. These include a new fruit garden and redesigned and replanted coastal and walled gardens. A formal parterre and a secret garden complete the picture with views across Morston to the sea a bonus!

Brick Kiln House

Sunday 26th July

Brick Kiln House at Shotesham St Mary is opening for the first time with colourful borders highlighting different types of planting and a pergola full of clematis set in a rose garden.

All the open gardens will be serving the renowned  NGS homemade teas and several will have plants for sale.

Sat 4 July

WALCOTT HOUSE, Walcott, Norwich NR12 0NU
Open (1.30-5). Adm £3.50, chd free. Light refreshments.

A garden in the making with emphasis on formal structure around the house and a traditional set of Norfolk farm buildings. These provide a series of connecting gardens which, through a south facing garden wall, lead to further gardens of clipped box, pleached hornbeam, fruit trees and roses. All set within recently planted woodland providing avenues and vistas.

BERGH APTON MANOR, Bergh Apton NR15 1BL.

Established walled garden as part of Georgian Manor House (not open). This beautiful garden is planted for colour throughout the year with formal edged borders and beds, pond, summerhouse, and terrace with vistas across 60 acres of wooded parkland which can be walked. It has arguably the best lawns in Norfolk.

DESERT WORLD GARDENS Santon Downham IP27 0TU.
Open (10-5). Adm £3.50, chd free. Light refreshments.

1¼ acres plantsman’s garden, specialising in tropical and arid plants. Hardy succulents – sempervivums and plectranthus. Bamboos, herbaceous, ferns, summer bulbs. View from roof garden. Large collection of hardy Ferns.

HOLME HALE HALL, Holme Hale, IP25 7ED.
Open (12-4). Adm £5, chd free. .Light refreshments

Noted for its spring display of tulips and aliums, historic wisteria plus mid and late summer flowering. Walled kitchen garden and front garden designed and planted in 2000 by Chelsea winner Arne Maynard. The garden incorporates herbaceous borders, trained fruit, vegetables and traditional greenhouse. We have created a terrace and nuttery and restored the Victorian Ice House.

BISHOP’S HOUSE, Bishopgate, Norwich NR3 1SB.

4-acre walled garden dating back to C12. Extensive lawns with specimen trees. Borders with many rare and unusual shrubs. Spectacular herbaceous borders flanked by yew hedges. Rose beds, meadow labyrinth, kitchen garden, woodland walk and long border with hostas and bamboo walk. Popular plant sales.

6 acres of garden incl three walled gardens, formal and informal in planting and design, a woodland garden with stumpery which hosts many unusual Hosta and Fern varieties planted amongst Mecanopsis and Dactoloryza., and a working kitchen garden. Beautifully maintained lawns, flanked by mixed perennial and shrub borders, open to stunning views of the surrounding landscape beyond the ha-ha.

BLICKLING ESTATE 

Aylsham, Norwich NR11 6NF.
Open (10.30-5.30). Adm £8.95, chd £4.95. Light refreshments.

Four centuries of good husbandry have made this 55 acre garden one of the greatest in England. Norah Lindsay, the society gardener, created the garden you see today, which includes an C18 Orangery, Temple, secret garden, beautiful double borders and parterre, lake and ancient yew hedges. The new rose garden is taking shape.

KETTLE HILL, Blakeney NR25 7PN.

Kettle Hill has been quietly simmering but is now back on the boil! With a new fruit garden designed by Tamara Bridge, as well as re designed and re planted coastal and walled gardens. A newly re designed and re planted coastal and walled garden. A formal parterre, long herbaceous borders, wild flower meadow and a secret garden. Stunning rose garden and grass paths through woods, a real treat for any garden lover. Excellent views across Morston to the sea, framed by lavender, roses and sky.

WEST LODGE, Aylsham NR11 6HB
Open (12-5).  Adm £5, chd free. Home-made teas.

9-acre garden with lawns, splendid mature trees, rose garden, well-stocked herbaceous borders, ornamental pond, magnificent 2½ acre C19 walled kitchen garden (maintained as such). Georgian house (not open) and outbuildings incl a well-stocked tool shed (open) and greenhouses.

BRICK KILN HOUSE, Shotesham St Mary, Norwich NR15 1UJ.
Open . (11-5). Adm £5, chd free. Home-made teas.

1¾ acre garden with a mixture of different types of planting. A large terrace, lawns and herbaceous borders near the house. A pergola with wisteria and clematis through a rose garden surrounded by a ‘topiaried ‘yew hedge. Mature trees in wooded area with stream running the length of the garden.

DALE FARM, Sandy Lane, Dereham NR19 2EA.

2 acre plant lover’s garden with a large spring fed pond. Over 800 plant varieties featured in exuberantly planted borders and waterside gardens.These incl a collection of 70 species and varieties of hydrangea. Kitchen garden, orchard, naturalistic planting areas, gravel garden and sculptures. Wide range of plants for sale incl rare hydrangeas. Rutland Wind Ensemble playing. Finalist in Britain’s Best Gardeners Garden competition.

This extended living/working space is the owner’s endeavour to redefine a suburban garden and to provide inspiration when viewed from his studio window. Aesthetic values, initially took precedent over gardening know-how, but over 30yrs a more balanced approach has resulted in an eclectic array of informal planting, rich in colour and form and full of surprises.
