Will Teather

Most valuable sale ever at 10th anniversary art fair for painting of Elm Hill Bookshop

A Norwich based artist has created a new sales record for London’s prestigious Other Art Fair.

The leading artists’ fair recently confirmed that Will Teather’s sphere painting of the Elm Hill Bookshop achieved the highest sale price it has ever recorded. It was sold for almost £11,000 to a private collector who owns works by some the world’s leading artists. The sale, at the fair’s 10th anniversary event was the first to go into five figures in its history. The artwork forms part of the artist’s new series of Infinite Perspectives, detailed three-dimensional paintings on globes and unusually formed canvases that employ an innovative type of inverted perspective, giving a 360° view of a space. The record sale was of a globe showing a detailed bookshop interior, based on Norwich’s Elm Hill Bookshop that reveals different aspects of the shop as it turns.Teather has also been appointed Artist-in-Residence at Norwich Arts Centre which will host a solo exhibition of recent ‘Infinite Perspectives’ work from 24 June – 6 August, timed to run alongside the British Art Show 8 at venues across Norwich (24 June – 4 September). Before then the work can also be seen in London at the next Other Art Fair (Victoria House Southampton Row WC1 7-10 April) and group exhibition Future Masters at Underdog Art Gallery (12-26 May Crucifix Lane SE1 3JW).

Will’s Infinite Perspectives artworks play with perspective and representation that slyly shifts, depending on which point you look at them from. The detailed bookshop interior reveals different aspects of the shop as it turns while another globe is filled with doves in flight; viewed from multiple viewpoints it creates the sensation of being in the centre of the flock as they swoop around.

‘Infinite perspectives is a project that explores new ground in the depiction of space, blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture’ explained Will.

The origins of Teather’s work lie in magical realism. The carnival-esque and a sense of the uncanny are favourite subjects. He wants to create extraordinary visual spectacles through painting.  As Teather says, ‘It’s about the relationship between the 2D and the 3D, and about creating something closer to the way we see. Our eyes are spheres and rotate around a space and I wanted to find a way to depict that’. As an Associate Lecturer in drawing at Norwich University of the Arts he is also interested in contributing to our journey through art history to the present day, and sees perspective as a fundamental part of that journey. www.willteather.com
