This August, Norwich Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART) are running two summer schools at Norwich’s Guildhall, allowing young people to explore arts and heritage.

Suitable for ages 12–21, the young people will achieve their Bronze Arts Award, a nationally recognised qualification. Participation is free of charge, although spaces are limited.

Participants will discover Norwich’s First World War history through the eyes of the iconic Colman’s brand and the experiences of the factory’s employees, while working with artists to create an exciting digital timeline, or their own wartime inspired performance poetry.

The first summer school, taking place from the 4^th to the 7^th of August, will focus on poetry and performance. Explore poetry from the First World War, before writing and performing your own poetry with poet Andy Bennett.

The second summer school will see artist Matt Reeve help young people create an interactive digital timeline based on their historical investigations. This summer school takes place from the 17^th to 21^st of August.

HEART’s Education Officer, Sarah Power, who is coordinating the summer schools, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn more about their city during the First World War, through the eyes of the Colman’s Factory. But it’s not just about increasing their historical knowledge of the city – we hope the young people’s artistic confidence will grow by achieving a Bronze Arts Award, a nationally recognised accreditation, and that they will be proud to share their creativity and knowledge during the Colman’s Connections exhibition showing at The Forum in November.”
