Retrospective Exhibition Strange-Sisters-3G
Strange Sisters 3G

Bramford artist Doug Kemp will be exhibiting paintings and prints from 1988 – 2015 in an exhibition entitled

‘A Very Small Retrospective’

in Gallery 1 at Wingfield Barns in July and August this year.

He has exhibited widely in the UK and well established contemporary art galleries such as Galerie Daniel Wahrenberger, Zurich and Star Gallery, Michigan City, Illinois, USA.  His work is graphic  bold, and colourful reflecting a passion for celebrating everyday life from romance and sit-coms to Chicago gangsters.

I’m an Industrial City Painter, which used to be called a Modernist fifty years ago. I am a colour and line man who ‘collects’ anything seen or felt from his life span and of course the history of art. I have just as much love of 10th Century Romanesque wall painting as the golden age of comics, all line and colour people. Everything and everyone has influenced me, in particular Art Deco, Fernand Léger and Max Beckmann.”

Following graduation in the 1960s from Walthamstow College of Art with fellow artist and pop star to be, Ian Dury and British film director Peter Greenaway, Kemp studied at The Royal Academy Schools. His career eventually expanded to international exhibitions, lecturing at Loughborough College of Art, Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools until his early retirement, returning to full time painting and a move to Bramford, Suffolk in the 1990s.

His commitment to working full time in the studio continues to this day. Now in his seventies Doug can be found working every day in the studio – his passion to create, celebrate life and entertain others has not diminished. The exhibition starts on Saturday 25th July until Sunday 30thAugust, Wednesdays to Sundays, 11am – 4pm. (NB: closed Saturday 8th and 22nd August)
