Romeo or Juliet

Romeo or Juliet?  You decide!

Innovative take on classic love story to tour Suffolk and Norfolk this July!

The Keeper’s Daughter’s Romeo or Juliet is an imaginative promenade adaptation played out as you have never seen.  The company specialises in making classic stories accessible to teenage and family audiences and this one is the most adventurous yet.

This adaptation splits the two story strands, Romeo’s and Juliet’s, in two and plays them out simultaneously in separate parts of the building. Upon arrival the audience are segregated, having sworn their allegiance to either the Capulets or Montagues. And whenever the two families meet thereafter, boy o boy, is there trouble.

Director Mark Finbow said: “The fact we split the play into Juliet’s story and Romeo’s story and they play out simultaneously in completely different areas of the venue I’m certain has never been done before with this play, anywhere – and that’s the really exciting bit; this production is opening up Shakespeare to young audiences in a genuinely innovative way.”

The show has been created in conjuction with DissFest and is supported by the Mid Suffolk Arts Fund.

Audience can get involved as much as they feel comfortable. There is a chance to learn a period dance, try your hand at stage combat and even to win a prize for the best mask, which audiences are encouraged to bring from home. Upon arrival people will be issued the colours of their clan and will only be able to mix with their own family – The Capulets or The Montagues. Each venue stages the show twice so you can switch sides at the interval and experience the story from the opposite perspective.

Stuart Parton, who plays Montague said: I’ve never been part of a rehearsal process where its evident that so many young people are just getting involved and having fun. It’s brilliant to see.”

Romeo or Juliet began life as a youth production in 2011, has been produced numerous times at High Schools and Colleges throughout the region and has proved a success with audiences young and old. It features sword fighting, dance, physical theatre and exquisite text work. This is the first time it has been staged with a cross-generational community cast. It is not to be missed.

Audience are advised to book in advance as tickets are strictly limited. The show tours to Seagull Theatre, Lowestoft on 21st, John Peel Centre, Stowmarket on Friday 22nd, St Edmundsbury Cathedral on Saturday 23rd, The Cut in Halesworth on Sunday 24th, Bungay Fisher Theatre on Saturday 30th and lastly plays DissFest in Diss on Sunday 31st.  For further details check www.facebook.com/thekeepersdaughter. Press Quotes on Previous Productions

‘It’s a highly inventive production that takes this highly familiar tale and turns it on its head’

Public Reviews, Dracula

It’s part of the great skill of The Keepers Daughter that they’re able to adhere faithfully to the text whilst adding their own inventive spin and sleights of hand… Dazzlingly ingenious.’ DCH Blog – The Hound of Baskervilles

Going to see a production by The Keeper’s Daughter is like walking a tightrope: gripping, dangerous, slightly insane and extraordinarily entertaining. Theatre should always be this vital and thrilling. Long may they continue.’ Diss Express, Dracula

The Keeper’s Daughter

There can be few small theatre companies around today able to rival the wit, originality and vigour of The Keeper’s Daughter.’ – Diss Express.

The Keeper’s Daughter use theatre and storytelling to stimulate imagination and nurture creative development within East Anglian Communities and beyond.  Currently there are two strands to the company’s work.

Rural touring – Using professional actors to deliver small scale stage plays to isolated communities throughout East Anglia.

Education and participation – We bring professional storytelling skills to people of all ages through workshops, producing community productions and through holding an annual acting summer school for teenagers.

The Keeper’s Daughter’s creative practice is based upon elements of Lecoq physical theatre: clown, ensemble and chorus work.  Our style is big, fast and imaginative.

Formed in 2009, The Keeper’s Daughter have toured new adaptations of A Christmas CarolDracula and Hound of the Baskervilles and have created original work for National Horse Racing Museum, West Suffolk College and Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.

The company were also selected as part of Brighton Fringe’s industry WINDOW week where they presented their sell-out modern adaptation of Frankenstein Beauty’s Legacy.
