Gilchrist-and-Nicholls

The Southwold Concert Series begins its new season on Saturday September 28th 2013 with the return of distinguished tenor James Gilchrist.

He will give a recital in St Edmund’s Church, Southwold, beginning at 7:30pm, accompanied by harpist Alison Nicholls, and pianist Nathan Williamson.

The programme, called ‘Britten and Ireland’, features a variety of songs from the British Isles, and emphasises a number of Southwold and Suffolk connections. Major works by Benjamin Britten are included, including the First and Fifth Canticles and Michelangelo Sonnets, alongside the languid ‘Land of Lost Content’ by of one of his teachers, John Ireland, setting text by A. E. Housman.

Various songs by Ivor Gurney are also included, as well as a new work by Nathan Williamson, setting a poem by one time Southwold resident David W. Lankshear, which reflects on a September dawn over Southwold beach.
