Work to refurbish the athletics track at Sportspark at the University of East Anglia is expected to take more time than anticipated. The work which began in mid July has already been delayed due to wet weather during August. Track marking is now taking place but the facility is not expected to re-open until Monday 26 September 2011.

The essential refurbishment is costing £100,000 and involves replacing worn areas on the track and run ups, recoating the surface layer, remarking and renovating the hammer throwing circle. The initial work has been completed and remarking has started this week. Remarking is expected to take ten working days, with an additional two days required for drying.

Director of Sportspark, Keith Nicholls said: “Unfortunately the poor weather this summer has meant that not only our initial work finished behind schedule, but that we’ve had to wait for the contractor marking the lines to finish another project elsewhere. Remarking has started now, but we still need to account for the weather over the coming weeks. We don’t expect to open the track until the week commencing 26th September. I have updated the City of Norwich Athletics Club who train at Sportspark and apologise for the inconvenience the closure is causing to our track users.”

Updates will be posted on the Sportspark website www.sportspark.co.uk as well as through Sportspark’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.
