A specialist physiotherapist from Norfolk’s community-based NHS health trust has again proven his mettle after achieving a podium place at the World Triathlon Championships, held at Hyde Park, in London.

Iain Dawson, 36, took part in the demanding Paratriathlon on Friday (September 13), which saw him complete a 750m swim, a 20k bike ride, and a 5k run. As the winner of the paratriathlons held in New Zealand last year, and Budapest in 2010, sporty Iain again showed his strength in London, finishing third.

Commenting on his podium finish, he said: “I’m really pleased with the result. I knew it would be hard to defend my title from last time, as standards are rising fast, so a podium place is a really decent result.”

Iain, from New Buckenham, works for Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust (NCH&C) as a specialist physiotherapist for people with Learning Disabilities, based at Attleborough Day Services.

Visually impaired, Iain has less than 10% sight and so competed alongside a guide, fellow Tri-Anglia club member, Matt Ellis. The pair swam side by side, tethered knee-to-knee, during the swim, and in tandem during the cycle leg, with Matt steering and Iain acting as ‘stoker’.

“For me it is all part of the normal run of things for competing, though it was nice to compete alongside someone I know so well from my training,” added Iain.
