Suffolk Community Foundation have awarded an arts charity crucial funds to help young musicians in Lowestoft develop their skills this summer.

The funds were allocated to Suffolk Artlink’s Rock Up project through a Working Together Award of £2,000 and a Bluebell Grant of £2,030, two funding schemes run by Suffolk Community Foundation.

Suffolk Artlink have been running Rock Up since September 2016. The new funds allow the arts charity to continue providing regular sessions for young musicians during the summer months.

Rock Up offers young people in Lowestoft a range of ways to develop their musical interests and talents during weekly music sessions at Colville House Senior Youth Club.

Music students are supported by professional music tutors at each session and given the chance to pick up an instrument and play alongside other young musicians.

Through taking part in one-to-one tuition, band practice, public performances and digital showcases, the students develop their skills and confidence as well as having the opportunity to work towards an Arts Award.

Candida Wingate, Suffolk Artlink project officer, said: “We are delighted that this funding will enable us to provide young musicians with opportunities to make their own music and showcase their work.

“Every week we witness amazing changes in our students’ lives as they enjoy the many benefits of making music together. As their creative and musical talents grow, so do their confidence and life skills.”

James, Rock Up music student, said: “I never used to go out and do anything, and now I am here every single week.  It’s boosted my confidence big time.”

Andrea Pittock, Grants Manager, Suffolk Community Foundation said: “It is a pleasure to deliver the Working Together Awards on behalf of Suffolk County Council. These awards always bring some excellent projects to our attention and it is wonderful to acknowledge these.”

Tim Holder, Development Director, Suffolk Community Foundation added: “Suffolk Artlink is leading the way in harnessing the power of the arts to address a wide variety of social and personal challenges that people face. Their Rock Up project is a fantastic example of how this works so well, connecting young people in Lowestoft with a subject that they are passionate about.’’
