Interchange

Suffolk Artlink is looking for a volunteer to assist the Interchange Project for a group of Young Adult Carers.

The project gives young adult carers the opportunity to collaborate with a professional artist of their choice. They will work together to explore their chosen art form and to create work which will be showcased at the end of the project.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience working alongside a professional artist and to support young adult carers in the creation of new artwork.

The project is based at the University Campus Suffolk in Ipswich and will run from January – March 2016. Sessions will take place on Monday evenings from 6pm – 9pm.

Roles and Responsibilities
·     To support and assist artist-led sessions

·     Assist and offer support with participants’ travel arrangements

Other Information
·     Travel expenses will be reimbursed
·     Volunteer will report to Suffolk Artlink’s Project Officer
·     Full Disclosure and Barring Service check will be conducted
·     References will be required as this project involves working with vulnerable young adults

Please send a letter of interest by email to Bridie Coombes at Suffolk Artlink outlining your relevant experience by Monday 30th November.

For more information or to express interest contact Bridie on 01986 873955 or [email protected].

We are seeking freelance photographers

Suffolk Artlink is putting a call out to find photographers with a skill in capturing participatory creative work. Our sessions bring people together to take part in inspirational arts activities – we need to capture what we do. Our fantastic photographer has retired so we are seeking photographers to bring our work to life through photographing those taking part in our workshop sessions (on an ad hoc basis throughout the year) for our website, publications and reports.

If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Alistair Winch by email [email protected] and send us a cover letter including examples of your work (or a link to your website), groups you have worked with and references.

Jumpstart

The students on the Making Spaces courses are continuing to work hard on their installation projects.  We have film making about a bear in a cinema, a ‘Space Factor’ set with performing aliens, performances of singing and acting, drawings, bookmaking, papier mache unerwater scenes, bumper cars made from shoes and a mobile club in an umbrella.

Students from Bury St Edmunds are going on a trip to Cambridge later this month.  We’ll be visiting the Fitzwilliam Museum to get some inspiration from the Kettles Yard exhibition.

The Bury St Edmunds final exhibition on Tuesday 8th December will be an exciting art trail around Bury St Edmunds with artwork at Moyses Hall, the St Johns Centre, The Apex and Elseys Gallery.

The Lowestoft final exhibition on Thursday 10th December will be on display at the Coconut Loft from 1pm – 4pm.

Suffolk at Play

Meet Boris – a straw-filled, push-along toy, on loan to Suffolk at Play from Laxfield Museum.

Meet Boris

Boris came with a wide selection of other toys and games from the Museum’s store room, many of which will feature in the animations created over the next few weeks.

Stradbroke Village Archive

As well as items from the Museum, we have started exploring the Stradbroke Village Archive and using some of their photos, for example this one of a children’s party held at the British Legion Hut in Stradbroke in the 1950’s.

Clown Round

The end of October 2015 is Phoenix like for Clown Round activity, as we say goodbye to the final year of funding that has made this project possible in recent times, whilst simultaneously  striding into the first of three newly funded years, generously made possible by Children in Need! Clown Round rises once again!

To show our thanks and to help Children in Need raise important funds to help disadvantaged children and young people across the UK, three of our Clown Doctors, Dr Christobell  Misschief, Dr Dizzy Daydream and Dr Quiver Quaver  will be attending the appeal night at The Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth this month. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for a peak of their red noses and general cheekiness on local TV!

The Clown Doctors have been spreading their contagious giggles across the wards this October with a smattering of autumnal cheer as the days begin to close in. If you had stumbled onto the children’s ward at Colchester this month, you would have seen the Clown Doctors bouncing around the outpatient’s clinic, celebrating birthdays and creating some extraordinary balloon creatures!

Watch out for the Clown Doctors trickery as we move into to November, as they bring silliness and joy to hospital wards across Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex.

Rock Up

Congratulations are in order this month.

First, to Marianna, who performed at a public gig in Norwich. “I sang six songs – all of them rehearsed and practised here at Rock Up – I did it.” Well done, Marianna, and we all look forward to the next gig.

Congratulations to the twins – they’ve recently started one-to-one tuition sessions and are doing so well, they are astonishing.

And to their older brother, who joined us last week for a bit of a jam, and then stayed for a one-to-one session – we’re thrilled to see him back, and long may he continue to make his music.

To all the regular one-to-one tuition students – youare all working so hard and learning so much – and to those who, for one reason or another, have come back to the sessions, and who are now teaching the younger ones how to play some really cool riffs.

To the beat-boxers who have recently set up camp in the room next door and get on with their thing … I don’t pretend to understand it, but you’re working really hard. Well done.

To the DJs and guitarists, drummers, keyboard players and vocalists who pop in, have a go, and then pop out again – keep popping in, keep having a go – keep rocking up.

Where We Meet

Sessions continue at Cedrus House, where students from Cedars Park Community Primary School visit once a week to take part in creative activities with the residents.

where we meet

The group is now concentrating on creating work for the end of term celebration, including coasters decorated with favourite colours and snippets of text collected during our ‘chatting time’. On the basis of last week, these will include references to cut glass whiskey decanters, fine bone china teacups – and bottles of pop sitting outside the pub.

creative activities

One resident told us about the little bottles of milk they had a school – a third of a pint  – and how she would go to the local farm to get the milk for her mother. At certain times of the year, the hedgerows were full of wild garlic, and the cows would munch on this, on their way to the milking parlour. The milk was always thick and fresh and creamy – but at that time of year it also had a strong taste of garlic.
