Suffolk celebrates its sporting success in memory of Elana Baltacha

Sport in Suffolk was celebrating Friday night as its sporting stars and unsung heroes had their achievements recognised at the 2014 Suffolk Sports Awards, including a special award presented in memory of Tennis player, Elena Baltacha, from Suffolk.

The ceremony, held at Trinity Park, Ipswich was organised by Suffolk Sport in partnership with Suffolk County Council and media partners BBC Radio Suffolk attracted around 300 guests.

Jack Somers from Ipswich won The Suffolk County Council Sports Personality of the Year Award, decided by public vote – powered by HTK Horizon.

Jack started Karate at the age of 6. At the age of 10 achieved his 1st Dan Black Belt, at the same time he successfully tried out for the KUGB England Kata squad and began what was to be a long road of intense training. He has now won an amazing 9 International Medals and is still only 20 years old, also achieving National and Regional Championship titles in both the Kata and Kumite. Jack is currently preparing to represent England again at the European Championships to be held in Switzerland in November.

Lewis Ludlam was named as The Summer House Productions Young Sports Personality of the Year beating off fierce competition, being one of only five players from the Northampton Saints Rugby Union Academy squad to secure a professional contract.

But the biggest round of applause went to those who were awarded a special award in memory of a truly remarkable Tennis player and inspirational role model from Suffolk – The Elena Baltacha Award. The award went to Michaele and James Gooch, an enthusiastic and committed couple who have provided the young people of Waveney the opportunity to participate in Athletics, drawing together the local community.

Over the past 18 months they have increased the number of young members at Waveney Valley Athletic Club from twenty athletes to just under one-hundred. Committed to developing the club, securing over £11,000 in grants to increase the clubs assets and provide quality equipment for the young people to train with.

With the level of commitment, dedication and hard work showed by all the finalists in all the categories, Sport in Suffolk is reaching new heights as we look to create a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The first ever Suffolk Workplace Games proves a success

The Suffolk Workplace Games, organised by Suffolk Sport, took place on Friday (12th September 2014) for the very first time proving to be an enjoyable event for all that participated.

Trinity Park hosted the event, with Ryan Insurance, UCS Student’s Union (University Campus Suffolk), Anglia Community Leisure, Abbeycroft Leisure, BT, AXA and Live Well Suffolk all competing against each other over six sports, ultimately to be crowned the 2014 Suffolk Workplace Games Champions.

The afternoon was a great opportunity for individuals to try their hand at team sports and individual challenges including Athletics, Golf, Archery, Rounders, Badminton and Netball – delivered by each sport’s National Governing Bodies.

Anglia Community Leisure came out on top as this years winners, announced during the opening ceremony of the Suffolk Sports Awards 2014, which took place after the event.

Warren Smyth, Chief Executive of Anglia Community Leisure, had a few positive words to say about the event: “The teams from both Abbeycroft Leisure and Anglia Community Leisure had a great time at the corporate games. Not only was it an opportunity to take part in different sports and meet other companies, but it also promoted team work and support between colleagues.”

Live Well Suffolk won The Most Active Workplace Award after being nominated for the Most Active Workplace Suffolk Sports Award category.
