Thetford Historical Character Walks

Come make the pilgrimage and join the Thetford Players as they perform their way through the historic town of Thetford, introducing Thomas Paine – born in Thetford, English-American political activist, author, political theorist, revolutionary and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

Paine will guide you to locations where characters that played a part in the town’s remarkable history will come to life and share their stories; some of those who may be met include

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Radcliffe (former owner of the Bell Inn),

Father John Brame of St. Mary’s Priory,

Susannah Holmes (wife of Henry Cabell, one of the founding families of Australia),

Sir Robert Williamson (MP in 1669 and great benefactor of Thetford),

Duleep Singh (the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and friend of Queen Victoria)

and perhaps the most famous of all – Boudica, leader of the British Iceni tribe.

The dates of each of the Walks are as follows:-

Sunday 29 June (original town Walk)
Sunday 24 August (original town and Priory Walks semi-combined)
Sunday 19 October (Priory Walk)

Each Walk in 2014 will be different but all will commence at 2.00pm from the Thomas Paine Hotel, Whitehart Street, Thetford, with each lasting approximately 90 minutes. The August Walk will be particularly special as it will include characters from the original Walk plus additional characters will feature who participated in last year’s one-off Priory Walk, also a stop at the Bell Hotel for light refreshments.

All Walks are wheelchair-friendly and tickets are priced at £6 each or £20 for a group (four people of any age) for the June and October Walks, the August Walk will be £8 each or £28 for a group (which includes refreshments). Come along and learn something new about Thetford!
