U10 AND U12 HOCKEY TEAMS SEEK REGIONAL GLORY

This coming weekend the club is hosting for the eighth successive year the East Club Minis or to give them their correct title the East Club IN2Hockey Championships. On Saturday the U12 Boys (from 10.30) and U10 Girls (from 1.25) will be in action and on Sunday it will be the turn of the U12 Girls (10.00) and U10 Boys (1.00). The club will be represented in each of the events with our teams having qualified through the Norfolk championships.

All four Magpies’ teams have enjoyed impressive seasons and after preparing well for the weekend ahead it will soon be time to pit their skills and determination against the best squads in the region.

The U12 Boys won the Bury St Edmunds tournament and have finished second in their other outings this season including the Norfolk Championship while the U10 Boys have also had a consistent season finishing second in all their events. Meanwhile the U12 Girls have won three of their five tournaments scoring 66 goals and conceding just 4. They were pipped for the Norfolk Championship by Pelicans without conceding a goal in the event and their only defeat of the season came at the hands of Cambridge City, their first opponents on Sunday, when coming second in the Bury tournament. The U10 Girls have had an even better season winning all five of their events scoring 79 goals while conceding just one!

All the very best to our teams, listed below, for an enjoyable and, hopefully, successful weekend. Best wishes also to our teams competing in the Alex Hill Memorial Tournament in Dereham on Sunday.

The Mixed team is through to the quarter-finals of the England Hockey Trophy after their 5-0 home win over Wisbech yesterday. The two teams also met last year with Magpies winning 9-0 but a repeat of that scoreline was never in prospect after Magpies took thirty minutes to open their account. Umpire Trevor Norman, who together, with his colleague Nikki Butcher had an excellent game, skilfully played an advantage when several in the crowd were calling for a penalty corner enabling Simon Hipwell to at last find a way for Magpies past the outstanding Kevin Shippey in the Wisbech goal. Two minutes later Lucy Whiting squared the ball in the circle for Maria Andrews who made no mistake from close range. Shortly after the break Maria scored the goal of the game finishing off a move down the left involving Simon and Robbie Kinsella. Sam Moore then finally located the goal after some earlier misses before Robbie scored the fifth with ten minutes remaining. Maria was voted MOTM while Sam, despite a typically wholehearted performance, was awarded the accolade that due to club policy we are no longer permitted to name!

Meanwhile in Peterborough the U14 Boys were playing in the regional finals of their national championship and they started with a 1-1 draw with Cambridge City who took the lead in the first half before Arthur Johnson equalised following good work by Jude Pottruff. The team then suffered 3-0 defeats at the hands of hosts City of Peterborough and Leicester. Despite the final score Magpies played some good hockey against Leicester and the experience of playing at this higher level should stand the players in good stead next season.
