Beccles based WLOG – Singin in the Rain

Technical challenges for WLOG

Beccles based Musical theatre society the Waveney Light Opera Group are gearing up for their next production, Singin in the Rain Beccles Musical theatre society Waveney Light Opera Group are gearing up for their next production at Beccles Public Hall in October, which will be performed at Beccles Public Hall in October.

The show, made famous by the 1952 film with Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor & Debbie Reynolds, contains great songs such as ‘Good Morning’. ‘Make ’em Laugh’ and of course ‘Singin’ in the Rain’. It is set in Hollywood in 1927 when the “talkies” were coming in. The new medium means that actors must now have a good voice, but Lina, the female lead sadly does not! Step forward a girl from the chorus with a beautiful voice who has caught the eye of Don, the leading man. Cue lots of intrigue and in-fighting but it all ends happily ever after.

The show presents several challenges for the group, not only onstage but also for the tech team. There’s the small problem of making it rain of course! On top of that the show has several ‘Movie’ sequences where we see Hollywood darlings Don and Lina up on the silver screen. Never ones to be daunted by a challenge the tech team have already been hard at work.

The Public Hall has been transformed into a Hollywood film lot for the filming of several of the scenes using green screen technology from which John Gallagher hopes to be able to recreate the classic black and white movies of the era. The society has already won two technical awards from NODA, for ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’ in spring 2009 when the stage was transformed into a fully functioning space ship, and ‘Sweet Charity’ in 2013.
