World Art Game Day
at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts

The Sainsbury Centre’s free family fun day is back this year, with a difference! This year’s event will be aWorld Art Game Day, with creative games inspired by the peoples and cultures of the world, created by children, young people, students and artists. The event will take place on Sunday 22 July 2012 outside the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia and offers live music, games, creative activities and fun for all the family. Everyone is welcome to drop in from midday until 4pm and get involved in the event. World Art Game Day has been granted the London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.
“This year’s family fun day will be bigger and more fun than ever! We’re delighted to have been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark and hope to welcome lots of families to join in and be inspired by our games, activities and collections.” – Charlotte Peel, education officer, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts
One of the highlights of the day will be a unique reconstruction of an ancient Mesoamerican ball game (never before attempted in the UK). This is an exciting game, played in a special court by up to seven players a side, where the ball is hit from the hips and the goal is a hoop set in the steep sides of the court. Visitors are invited to put on a special ball player costume and have a go! After some coaching there is a chance to play as part of a team in the ball game finale between 3pm and 4pm.
There will be a range of fun and creative activities taking place in activity stalls outside the Centre throughout the afternoon. Children can make a Ball Player headdress, and maybe wear it to support the teams in the game! Visitors can test their aim at the coconut shy, learn how to make salt-dough figures, or have their face painted. There are even musical games, as the Centre welcomes back Community Music East for some noisy fun throughout the afternoon. Novinka! Folska band will be providing more music, with soaring melodies and dancey rhythms from 12.30pm to 1.30pm and from 2pm to 3pm.
Those feeling full of energy can take part in races inspired by the objects in the Sainsbury Centre collections including the ‘Egg and Spoon on Legs’ and the ‘Bucket Man versus Little Dancer’ races. There will be races for all ages in the grounds around the Centre, and prizes to be won! For visitors hoping for a more relaxing afternoon, Rosie Evans will be leading Chair Yoga in the education studio. At 1pm and 2pm visitors can join artist Kaitlin Ferguson in walking the ancient Nazca Lines of Peru, which will be mapped onto the floor of the Living Area Gallery. There’s also time to take a look around the Sainsbury Centre galleries and see the objects that inspired the day
As part of the event, some of the schools in the local area have teamed up with the Sainsbury Centre to design some special activities. These have been tested at the schools’ summer fairs, ready for World Art Game Day. Children from Earlham Early Years Centre have designed special games for our youngest visitors to play, including Cycladic Skittles and a game of Musical Statues based on sculptures in the collection. West Earlham Junior School have made games based on the heads in the collection.
Visitors can treat themselves to a take-out picnic or something from the barbeque, while the Modern Life Café will be serving a range of drinks and tasty lunches.
Event detail is subject to the weather. The event will take place inside the Sainsbury Centre if it is raining.
