Young oncology patients had smiles on their faces when they were handed presents that meant a whole new world would open up to them.
The youngsters at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) were each presented with a large telescope by Mark Thompson, presenter of the popular TV series Stargazing Live.
The telescopes were given by Norfolk charity Reach for a Star which supports children with life threatening conditions. It has become an annual event and this years telescopes were thanks to a donation from the Greggs Foundation.
Mark Thompson, who also lives in Norfolk, is a patron of the charity. He spoke to each of the children and their parents and presented them with the telescope, a t-shirt and a goody bag.
Reach for a Star was set up by James Lewis after his four year old son, William, was diagnosed with a brain tumour. During William’s treatment and late night visits to hospital, he became fascinated with the stars.
James said: “The idea for the charity came about after a family friend gave William a telescope when he was ill. It made such a huge difference to William when he was feeling poorly. We wanted to do something similar for other children who are critically ill.”
With public support Reach for a Star also purchase specialist pushchairs, orthopaedic beds, sensory and educational items or aid with travel expenses for children with life threatening illnesses.
Rosie Larkins, Specialist Nurse in Paediatric Oncology said “This is a great opportunity for the children to learn more about the stars. It also means they can come to something enjoyable and fun at the hospital as well as medical treatment.”
