Into Thin Air

‘A compelling mystery and tender family memoir’ by Rob John

Touring Norfolk and Suffolk October 2018

It’s 1982. The Falklands war is on the telly. Dexy’s Midnight Runners haunt the airwaves and 15-year-old Norfolk school girl Susan Kemp is going off the rails. And then she vanishes . . . into thin air.

Thirty six years later her brothers Pete and Melvin still live in the shadow of Susan’s disappearance.

This storyline is the basis of the new play by Rob John, Into Thin Air, which will be touring Norfolk and Suffolk in October.

Rob acknowledges that when Norfolk people hear about the subject of his play they inevitably mention the tragic case of April Fabb the Norfolk teenager who disappeared in 1969.

“I live in North Norfolk only a couple of miles from the place where April was last seen. I’ve often thought about the awful long-term impact of her disappearance on her family but although the idea for the play might have in some way been triggered by this well-known case my story and its characters are entirely fictional,” he says.

Into Thin Air is the latest production of fEAST Theatre. Having established themselves as one of the region’s most accomplished professional touring theatre companies with sell out tours of The Canada Boys, Parachute and, earlier this year, Salt, fEAST describes the play as a compelling mystery, a tender family memoir and a sad comedy of ambiguous loss.

It stars London-based actress Charlotte Price who plays Susan, and is directed by Rob and  features fEAST regulars Dawn Finnerty, Robin McLoughlin and Owen Evans of Nimmo Twins fame.

Co-director Dawn Finnerty said: “Like many theatre makers we would love to see more young people at our shows. Under 20s are a hard-to-reach audience and we are determined to challenge that. We feel that Rob’s story will appeal to younger people as well as our established audience and so we are planning to give students in schools and colleges an opportunity to meet some of the characters from the play through a series of Forum Theatre workshops.

“We hope that some of those who take part in these sessions will want to find out what happens next and so come and see the show.”

Since the company was established in 2010 fEAST Theatre’s reputation has grown and the company has built up a loyal audience in the region with a series of well-received touring productions but they are hoping that this production will extend their audience base still further.
