We all know what the targets are, we’ve been told enough times… 30 minutes of exercise three times a week, at least five portions of fruit and veg per day etc

Although guidelines can be useful, it can turn fitness and a healthy lifestyle into a bit of a chore. We can feel anxious about whether we’re doing enough exercise and if we’ve had the right size portion of fruit to count towards our daily quota… it all gets a bit stressful!

Every week there are more headlines about obesity in the UK. The facts and figures tell us how fat we are and how fat we are likely to be in 20 years’ time. Our response to all this information has to be to get active and healthy – but it helps if our motivation is enjoyment rather than an attempt to reach a prescribed target.

Sport is fun, sociable and makes you feel good. The key is to find something you enjoy doing; an afternoon out in the sunshine playing tennis, a late night session in the gym, a bracing swim in the North Sea – something that might be your worst nightmare will be someone else’s idea of fun!

Active Norfolk’s mission is to make Norfolk an active, healthy and successful sporting county – and to have FUN doing it!

Active Norfolk supports local sports clubs to help them develop and attract more people to participate. The organisation also runs coaching courses and holiday clubs for children.

The Active Norfolk website www.activenorfolk.org has a complete activity search so you can find out what sports are happening in your area. So if you want to join a cricket club or find out where you can do yoga classes, you can do a simple search to find what you’re looking for.

The Active Youth pages include quizzes, a photo gallery and fascinating facts about sport. Questions are answered such as why is a rugby ball egg-shaped? There are useful tips and tricks such as how to take the perfect penalty. You can also access information on the more unusual sports such as fencing and extreme kiting.

There should be no barriers to participation in sport so Active Norfolk is developing activities such as wheelchair basketball and wheelchair football. It is important to ensure that people can join in whatever their ability.

So maybe we should have a new target: to incorporate sport and healthy eating into our lifestyles so it becomes second nature and we don’t even measure it.

Definitely more enjoyable than counting vegetables!
