The Crooked House Gallery’s Christmas Show ALL THINGS BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL celebrates hares – boxing, resting, sitting; in ceramics, sculpture and pictures.

Beccles artist, Mandy Walden, regards the hare as part of the magic in the landscape. Her sought-after prints communicate an atmosphere of place; of magical ordinariness; of folklore.

“Hares are a bit of a passion – my house is full of them … I like to spend most of my free time walking or birding and my obsession with hares has just developed….

When I start a picture, I make a lot of thumbnail sketches and the composition evolves. It always amazes me how different each hare looks once the block is made and printed.

The narrative side doesn’t happen until I get to the title, then the words start to flow … My ambition has always been to write and illustrate my own book that would appeal to both adults and children.”

Mandy is also a teacher at Yoxford Primary School and uses pictures to stimulate the children to write creatively.

Mandy’s new picture shows hares congregating on the Green outside Holy Trinity church in Long Melford … as well as leaping over the Crooked House in medieval Lavenham.
