Martin Bell

An Afternoon with Martin Bell OBE has been set for Sunday 13 May at 2.30pm (doors open at 2pm) at Beccles Public Hall when Martin will be reflecting on War and Death of the News – his “hard-hitting” book from June 2017.

Martin Bell has been present in war zones as both a soldier and a journalist. From Vietnam to Bosnia to Iraq, he has witnessed first-hand the dramatic changes in how conflicts are fought and how they are reported. He’s seen the truth degraded in the name of balance and good taste – grief and pain censored so the viewers are not disturbed.

In an age of international terror, where journalists themselves have become targets, more and more reports are issued from the sidelines. The dominance of social media has ushered in a post-truth world: Twitter rumours and unverifiable videos abound, and TV news seeks to entertain rather than inform.

In this compelling account, one of the outstanding journalists of our time provides a moving, personal account of war and issues an impassioned call to put the substance back in our news.

Martin has strong links with the Beccles, having been born and brought up in Redisham where his father was author-farmer, Adrian Bell.

Martin Bell OBE is an author, journalist and politician and was appointed UNICEF Ambassador for Humanitarian Emergencies in 2001. Graduating from King’s College Cambridge with a 1st Class Honours Degree in English he joined the BBC in Norwich in 1962, eventually becoming diplomatic correspondent, chief Washington correspondent and Berlin correspondent. BBC and UNICEF assignments have included 102 countries and 18 wars.

He was wounded by mortar fire in Sarajevo in 1992. Martin left the BBC in April 1997 to stand as an Independent against the MP for Tatton, Neil Hamilton, winning with an 11,000 vote majority, the first elected Independent since 1951.

His books will be on sale and home-made cakes and other refreshments will be available. Tickets are £9 and £8 for concessions and are available for purchase on-line at: www.becclespublichall.co.uk from the box office, open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm or by telephone for FREE credit and debit card payments and we will hold your tickets for collection on the day: 01502 770060.
