Art collective to open spring exhibition

The Spring Exhibition by the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists (SEAW) will take place at The Pond Gallery at Snape Maltings.

Featuring the work of more than 30 artists, the exhibition will give viewers the chance to look at work produced by society members who are all passionate about watercolour and hail from Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex.

With more than 80 paintings on show, and a similar number of unframed paintings available to view, visitors are invited to vote for their favourite painting on show, with all votes entered into a prize draw for a £75 voucher to be redeemed against a painting on display.

Chairman of SEAW, Vandy Massey, said: “This will be our second year exhibiting at The Pond Gallery and we arethrilled to be there again.

“It’s a fabulous venue and a great place for people to come and enjoy good quality art on a day out. A few of our members will be in attendance every day to answer questions and talk to visitors about any aspects of watercolours they are interested in.

“Last year was the society’s 10th anniversary and it is gratifying to see an increase in interest in this wonderful medium. Watercolour has a life all of its own. Its translucence and flow are the keys to its beauty.

“Willem de Kooning said, ‘Watercolour is the first and the last thing an artist does.’ Aspiring artists are often drawn to it as a first medium because the equipment required is minimal and it’s the medium we are taught to paint in as children. It says something about the seductiveness of the medium that experienced artists who have gone on a lifelong journey often return to it to master its challenges and fall in love with its beauty all over again.”

From vibrant portraits and evocative landscapes to detailed plant studies and lively animal scenes there will be a range of work on display.

Society member Gilly Marklew said: “I’m really grateful to be part of the SEAW. I have been a member for many years, from the time when I lived in South Cambridgeshire to now when I live in South Norfolk. I love the continuity of belonging to this community of people, who are as passionate about watercolours as I am.”

It is the society’s aim to bring watercolour in all its myriad forms and subtleties to a wider audience throughout the counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Bedfordshire.

The society was inaugurated in 2007 with the help and guidance of the Royal Watercolour Society and their then president Richard Sorrell, and later adopted the title of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists.
