Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail 2019
The sixth Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail is set to return to south Norfolk in 2019.
Annually attracting thousands of visitors to the region, this year’s trail will feature the work of 38 artists from across the UK.
Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts, the event takes place at The Raveningham Centre, ten miles south of Norwich, on a three-acre site of lawns, hidden groves, orchards and walkways.
Each year the organisation hosts a programme of events that highlights the unique character of the Waveney and Blyth valleys situated in north Suffolk and south Norfolk.
In 2019 the sculpture trail will take place over five weeks, from Friday 2nd August to Sunday 8th September and will include site-specific work, 3-D constructions and sculpture.
A new area of woodland, which gives views out over neighbouring meadows and pasture land, has been opened up for 2019 to provide a space for large-scale sculpture.
Both established and up-and-coming artists will be exploring the theme of The Woven
Woodland through their work using materials, structures and creative ideas in the meadows, woodland and natural spaces at Raveningham.
Nicky Stainton from Waveney & Blyth Arts said: “We are so excited about this year’s Trail as almost half the artists are showing work with us for the first time.
“The site has also extended and both these elements will mean that it will be a different experience for visitors. We are also happy to welcome back some of the artists from previous years and know that there is a lot of fascinating and beautiful work being created behind the scenes.”
The Trail, which drew almost 4,000 visitors in 2018, is curated again by Sarah Cannell. She said: “I am delighted to be curating the sculpture trail again. My overall vision is to continue to encourage public interaction with contemporary art in a rural setting.”
All artwork on the trail will be available for sale and there will be a pop-up gallery in the farmhouse showing prints, paintings, textiles and ceramics.
Sculptor Andy Jarrett said: “I’m thrilled to be taking part in the Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail this year, it’s a very special occasion when so many sculptors come together to share so much amazing creativity.”
The trail is open every day from 10am until 5pm at The Raveningham Centre, Beccles Road, Raveningham, Norfolk NR14 6NU.
Entry is £6 for adults (£5 members of Waveney & Blyth Arts), under 18s are free. Pay on entry only.
There is plentiful free parking and designated disabled parking. Toilets are wheelchair accessible and have nappy changing facilities. A mobility scooter will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for a small donation.
The Ravenous Café will be open every day for light lunches, drinks, cakes, and home- made refreshments, and will feature an exhibition of textiles by Helen Howes.
Additional activities will take place including a curator’s guided walk, a BSL guided walk, workshops, performances and family events.

Artist Profiles
Simon Turner
This is my first time exhibiting at the Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail and I am working on a much bigger scale than normal. My smaller sculptures are usually only a few inches tall whereas for this I am looking at a piece which is around 10 feet high.
I am working with two slabs of elm – one of which will be left natural and the other dyed black through a process called ebonising. I will combine these with copper wire to make two abstract pieces.
This will be a new departure for me working on this scale and it is a little daunting but I am really excited about being asked to take part along with so many really great artists at such an amazing venue. I will be selling small sculptures in the shop for anyone whocan’t fit the huge one into their garden.

My sculptures in welded steel are reactions to a deep connection to nature, there is so much to be inspired by.

I’m very excited about taking part in the Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail this summer because the opportunity it gives me to make work in response to the woodland site fitsperfectly with ideas I’ve been developing about walking and pathways.
I am making a piece of woven paper mâché to hang from a branch to the ground, which I hope will raise questions about access and viewpoints. This new work is connected to a piece I previously made for my MA Show, which was also a hanging made in response to woodland.

Whilst driving across the Marlborough downs last Spring, I saw three hares chasing each other across a ploughed field. Leaping and running I felt very privileged to have seen these fascinating and elusive animals and was inspired to make a series of sculptures.
I sculpted the form of the hares directly onto a wire amateur with plaster which is a more immediate and spontaneous way of working than my normal medium – clay. It better simulates their ruffled hair in the wind.
I am looking forward to visitors to the Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail coming across my drove of hares around bend unexpectedly or glimpsing them in the distance.

Music inspired by Bugs & Blossoms
The Sensing Nature Ensemble will perform songs and improvised pieces composed collaboratively by the group in response to the sounds and images of nature, and Janet Koralambe will lead singers from local choirs in songs from different cultures celebrating the natural world. Outside, or in the café if wet.
