Royal Arcade
The Age of Panic by Will Teather- Oil on panel – 115 x 143cm

Artist unveils Panic Buying Painting at Royal Arcade

Will Teather has unveiled a huge painting depicting scenes of panic buying, at the Royal Arcade in Norwich.

The painting has taken the artist several months to complete. The scene has a baroque style but depicts the modern day drama of panic-buying. The scene is set in the well-loved local store, Thorns DIY.

The artist explains:

“This work is intended to explore the emotional attachment and passions surrounding objects of desire within capitalism, from loo roll to Adidas, and the way shopping acts as a gateway to our wider emotions.

During the pandemic, with people’s feelings heightened, I became very aware of how shopping was an emotional experience, full of joy some times but also anxiety around not being able to get hold of the items we take for granted.  It was also one of the few places isolated people could speak to some one face-to-face, when they bought their weekly shop. ”

The painting is currently on display in an empty shop unit within the Royal Arcade Norwich.  The artist intends to display the artwork there until November.

The project has been supported by Arts Council England and Norwich Arts Centre.
