On January 1st 2013 Pensthorpe Wildlife & Gardens will be calling on the help of junior twitchers to spot birds both rare and common across the Reserve.

Budding junior twitchers will be given handy Spotter Sheets, outlining 30 different species of bird, duck and geese which can be found at Pensthorpe. Each bird spotted is worth a certain number of points, with Peregrines, Bitterns and Kingfishers being among the highest scorers.

To help, pictures of the birds will feature on the spotter sheets and wardens will be available at The Wader Scrape between 11am and 12pm or 1pm til 2pm with useful advice.

At the end of the day, scores will be tallied and children with the highest scores will win a prize.

Kirsty Willingham, Events Manager at Pensthorpe says: “This is a great way of getting your children out in some fresh air this New Year!  We’re all guilty of over-indulgence at Christmas, so this event will blow away cobwebs at the turn of the year and get children interested in the wildlife surrounding us.

“Recent enhancements to the popular Wader Scrape area has encouraged even more birds to visit and Pensthorpe’s Head Warden Ed Bramham-Jones recently recorded 312 European Green Winged Teal, one of the best highest numbers recorded on the Reserve and145 Wigeon with their whistling call. There’s never been a better time to spot birds at Pensthorpe”.

The Junior Twitcher experience is included in admission to Pensthorpe otherwise priced £6.25 (aged 4 -16). Binoculars can be hired from the Pensthorpe shop.
